Trump Could Ask Congress, Not Mexico, To Pay For His Wall Project
However, how Trump’s team intends to convince the Mexican government to pay for it is still unclear.
Trump did not specify in his tweet whether his administration would seek to build the wall with taxpayer money, although he suggested in a speech in October that USA government funds could initially be used to get the project off the ground. “They will pay for it”, he tweeted along with a few other messages.
“We did discuss the wall”, Trump said.
One of the pressing issues during the 2016 USA election was the topic of illegal immigration.
The plan was confirmed by two congressional officials and one transition team official with knowledge of the talks; All asked not to be identified as they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.
After spending more than a year talking about how America was going to build a huge wall along our southern border and that Mexico would pay for it, a new report suggests that America will pay for the stupid wall. “Mexico will not pay for the wall”, Peña Nieto tweeted at the time.
Trump has repeatedly explained that he will build the wall initially using USA taxpayer dollars, which will then be reimbursed by Mexico. According to Trump, Mexico will then send a check to cover whatever money Congress appropriates in the rush to build the “Great Wall”. It proposed amending the Patriot Act, passed after the September 11, 2001 attacks, to include wire transfers as accounts that could be frozen.
The legislation gave permission to build over 700 miles of “physical barrier” on the “southern border” between the US and Mexico and left it up to the Secretary of Homeland Security to decide what that barrier will consist of. “We have the leverage, so Mexico will back down”, it said.
However, former Mexican President Vicente Fox Quesada tweeted to say that isn’t going to happen.
The plan, CNN said, is to fund a law passed by George W Bush in 2006 that allowed for the building of a wall. By comparison, the cost of Trump’s wall is only $8-10 billion.
However, many are concerned by the huge cost of the project to the taxpayer.
Trump has signalled since being elected that he would be open to fencing rather than a wall in some areas. A failure to fund government operations could lead to a shutdown.
