Trump criticised for mocking disabled reporter
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump faced heavy criticism this week for his comments and apparent mocking of a reporter for the New York Times who is disabled.
Trump brought up the article while defending his debunked claim that there were “thousands” of Muslims in New Jersey “cheering” while the twin towers went down on September 11. Trump has made unsubstantiated claims that thousands of Muslims in New Jersey were seen celebrating the attack.
Y’all know how this works by now: Donald Trump does something outrageous, he gets condemned for it, and his response is to blithely insult the people going after him.
Here’s what Trump said: “Written by a nice reporter”. I don’t remember!’ ” Trump said as he spoke on his podium, waving his arms about in an attempt to apparently copy the writer’s movements.
A statement posted on his Twitter account said Trump doesn’t know the reporter personally or what he looks like and was only mocking his journalism.
Other journalists also hit Trump and came to Kovaleski’s defense.
During Trump’s Tuesday night speech, he used an exaggerated voice and arm actions as he pretended to be Kovaleski. “That was not the case, as best as I can remember”. “The unhappy part about it is, it didn’t in the slightest bit jar or shock me in that Donald Trump would do something this low-rent, given his track record”, Kovaleski told The Post.
Trump’s camp insists he didn’t start the discussion about databases and ID badges, saying he was first asked the question by reporters. “I don’t know if he is J.J. Watt or Muhammad Ali in his prime – or somebody of less athletic or physical ability”, Trump said.
Meanwhile, an advocacy group offered Trump some Thanksgiving sensitivity training.
An unidentified Trump campaign official told The Washington Post on Wednesday that Trump wasn’t mocking Kovaleski’s appearance and had no idea he had a condition.
In August, he refused to apologise after implying that Fox News journalist Megyn Kelly was tough on him during one of the Republican debates because she was menstruating.
