Trump defends call for banning Muslims from United States
We’re not talking about religion; we’re talking about security.
Asked about recent statements they’ve made about each other, Trump and Cruz both played nice. The Texas senator is on the rise, particularly in Iowa’s kickoff caucuses, and is casting himself as a more electable alternative to Trump, while Rubio is seeking to straddle the divide between his party’s establishment and more conservative wings. “It is a recipe for World War III”.
But a nationwide poll released on Tuesday by the Washington Post and ABC News showed Trump has increased his lead in the Republican primary to its largest margin yet. (And yes, we should acknowledge that this vision was always selective – nobody proposed overthrowing the government of Saudi Arabia, one of the most oppressive dictatorships on earth). A year after announcing his intentions to run for president and millions of dollars spent, Bush is lagging in the single digits. And he’d be a chaos President. “He said that very simply because he has failed in this campaign”, he responded. “It’s been a total disaster”.
Loser, What’s This Debate About Again Division: Chris Christie.
“I know you’re trying to build up your energy Jeb, but it’s not working”, he said. “They declared war on us, and we need a serious strategy to defeat ISIS”.
“You’re not going to insult your way to the presidency”, the former Florida governor told Trump.
“You think this is tough and you’re not being treated fairly, imagine what it will be like dealing with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin … this is a tough business, running for president”, Bush said.
Trump: Will you apologize Jeb?
“Not only would I be prepared to do it, I would do it”, he said. This was the fifth debate (the fourth where she’s been on the main stage) and she’s still introducing herself to the electorate.
“If your eyes are glazing over like mine this is what it is like to be on the floor of the United States Senate”, he said. “Endless debate about how many angels fit on the head of a pin for people who have never had to make a consequential decision in the executive position”.
“He is the one for an open border that is leaving us defenseless”, Paul said. “People don’t care about that”.
Rubio has tried to shift the attention away from this potential vulnerability by arguing that Cruz has supported legalization for undocumented immigrants and moved to expand the H-1B visa program.
Republican front-runner Donald Trump sharply clashed with challenger Jeb Bush in a national security debate on Tuesday but escaped any severe criticism from his other rivals, who were reluctant to take on the contentious billionaire. Cruz is a stricter small-government conservative, favouring a more libertarian approach on surveillance domestically and a more laissez-faire attitude to foreign tyrants.
“You can’t carpet bomb ISIS if you don’t have planes and bombs to attack it with”, the Florida lawmaker said, referring to Cruz’s votes against the National Defense Authorization Act that is responsible for military funding.
Senator Lindsey Graham apologised to US-allied Muslim leaders saying: “I am sorry”. He got a good laugh from the crowd for that one.
Trump later narrowed his answer, clarifying that he was speaking about parts of Syria and Iraq.
Bush had his best performance to date, provoking Trump at several turns. “I just can’t imagine somebody booing”. “He would not be the commander in chief we need to keep our country safe”. And you’re objecting to us infiltrating their conversations? “I think it’s very sad”.
Also showing signs of the strain of the campaign Tuesday night was Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who returned to reciting his familiar home-state formula for success: “It’s reform, it’s hope, it’s growth, it’s opportunity, and it’s security”.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump confirmed at the Republican Presidential Debate in Las Vegas that he will remain loyal to the GOP. “Okay. No small feat”. I fought terrorists and won.
The only candidates to attack the real estate magnate were candidates lagging near the bottom of the polls.
But what did each of them say to their followers after the cameras turned off?
Nine of the 13 candidates actively seeking the Republican nomination took the stage in Las Vegas to face questions on foreign policy by CNN journalists. Rand Paul pointed out somewhat incredulously.
CNN political commentator David Axelrod, a former top Obama adviser, said that while Trump didn’t meet the bar on facts and “linear thinking”, he was “in character”.
“I’m a former prosecutor”. “And frankly, I’m the most solid person up here”. “I like to be front-runner”.
