Trump demands Ginsburg resign for criticizing him as unfit
House Speaker Paul Ryan – a reluctant Trump supporter who does not hesitate to differentiate his views – told CNN Tuesday that Ginsburg’s comments are proof of the need for a Republican president to choose who goes on the Court next.
Or maybe he just wants to “swamp” her in the sense of “packing” the court with justices of his liking ― like Franklin D. Roosevelt tried in the 1930s when he was really upset with a Supreme Court that wouldn’t side with his New Deal policies. Ginsburg also criticized Trump for not making his recent tax returns public. With the Republican National Convention taking place next week, it will very likely rally a lot of Republicans who have reservations about him to his corner.
As Ed noted earlier today, Justice Ginsburg’s statements about Donald Trump are so out of line that the NY Times titled its editorial on the matter, “Donald Trump is right about Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg”. She worries for the next four years if he wins the presidency, and shudders for the future of the court.
“I think Justice Ginsburg’s remarks were totally inappropriate and I wish she hadn’t said them”, says Majority Leader, Senator Mitch McConnell.
Mr Trump, who needs to energise conservatives in his party who are divided over his unorthodox candidacy, has emphasised the importance of naming conservative justices to the Supreme Court. Bush decision rendered by the Supreme Court as yet another reason justices should avoid giving voice to their political preferences. As Justice Ginsburg pointed out, other justices are nearing an age when retirement would not be surprising.
“He is a faker”, she said in the CNN interview.
Could it be Trump made a typo and wants to “swap” her with someone else, which he can’t constitutionally do?
The Supreme Court, whose nine justices are nominated by the USA president to lifetime appointments, is in the spotlight this presidential election cycle after Scalia’s death.
The Washington Post – which has warred with Trump and even had its campaign credentials pulled by him – also sided with the billionaire against the Brooklyn-born justice. While highly unlikely, the editorial cautioned that there is always a chance this year’s election could end in a virtual tie, which ends up before the high court.
The paper recalled the 2000 presidential election which was eventually decided by the Supreme Court.
WILLIAMS: I don’t think anyone is surprised to know that Ruth Bader Ginsburg would prefer to see Hillary Clinton elected president. Just last summer, for instance, she called out her male colleagues on the court for having a “blind spot” when it comes to women’s issues. He said members of the Supreme Court shouldn’t weigh in on American elections.
“That’s their job”, she said.
However inappropriate Ginsburg’s comments are, let’s be honest with ourselves. Republicans have said the next president should be allowed to nominate a replacement for the conservative Scalia.
Experts have chimed in as well, with some wondering whether Ginsburg would have to recuse herself from potential cases involving Trump.
