Trump Didn’t Like Scalia’s Comments on Affirmative Action
To obtain a culturally and racially diverse student body, the state instituted a “top 10 percent” admission policy: seniors placing in the top decile of their high school’s graduating class were automatically admitted to the university.
She appealed her rejection in court, arguing that because race was a factor in determining acceptance, she had been discriminated against because she was not a racial minority.
Now, a group of physicists and astrophysicists are circulating a letter they intend to send to SCOTUS, voicing their dissent to Scalia’s remarks.
Reid also compared Scalia’s comments to the speeches coming from Donald Trump, and the Republicans.
Associate Justice Antonin Scalia is seen during the group portrait, Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at the Supreme Court in Washington.
Liberals who believe that the courts should have required Fisher to prove that she would have gotten into UT absent affirmative action, should keep in mind that such a ruling would make it harder for blacks, Hispanics, and other minorities to challenge government policies that discriminate against them.
Maybe the university ought to have fewer Blacks students, Scalia added.
A 2013 report from the center found that high-scoring black and Latino students were almost twice as likely to graduate if they attended selective institutions than if they went to open-access colleges – as most do – that spent a fraction of the money on their educations.
At Miami University, where officials are closely following the case – and strongly support the University of Texas position – Michael Kabbaz, the school’s vice president for enrollment management and student success, said diversity is an obligation.
“These ideas that he pronounced yesterday are racist in application, if not intent”, Reid remarked.
Startling this week were the words of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia during oral arguments on the University of Texas case.
Congressional Black Caucus Chairman G.K. Butterfield (D) a former trial and appellate judge for 15 years, said Scalia’s “inflammatory” comments revealed a bias that warranted censure and undermined the authority of the Supreme Court. He added, “Justice Scalia has removed any presumption of impartiality and should recuse himself from the case”.
Scalia and Alito are often thought of as twins on the Supreme Court-both are Italian-American conservatives, with similar names. “His comments were improper and warrant review by the Judicial Conference of the United States to consider his removal from the bench”. Any way you cut it. No spin.
Also filing a friend of the court brief was the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, which says it has “long played a key role in the litigation of this case”.
“I myself went to Harvard, and while I think that may be true for some students who need that kind of nurturing, there are clearly other black kids who don’t, who compete just as well”, Adams said.
