Trump ends standoff with Ryan as he works to repair mistakes
Trump’s endorsement of Ryan came at a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Ryan’s home state, CNN reported.
Trump said, “We have to unite”.
The second-term governor has responded subtly, posting messages on Twitter about “honor and respect” for Gold Star families and saying, “Republicans are lucky to have” House Speaker Paul Ryan, of Wisconsin, and Sens. “Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire”.
But Trump’s assault on Clinton’s character also came as he himself faced stinging criticism from top USA officials, including a damning editorial on Friday in which the former acting head of the CIA, Michael Morell, a well-respected and non-partisan figure, endorsed Clinton and warned that Trump “is not only unqualified for the job, but he may well pose a threat to our national security”.
“I’m embarrassed. I’m ashamed”, she told the newspaper.
However, the endorsement is not without some peril for Ryan, despite leading primary rival and conservative businessman Paul Nehlen by as much as 66 percent points, according to poll released this week by the Remington Research Group.
The Democratic presidential nominee got more than a few chuckles when she accidentally nearly referred to Trump as her husband. Just days after Ryan’s endorsement of Trump, Ryan said that Trump’s comments directed toward a federal judge of Mexican descent involving the judge’s impartiality was “textbook racism”.
Clinton said if Democrats win the Senate and pick up additional seats in the Republican-run House, it will be possible to pass a bipartisan bill that addresses the issue, like the one that stalled in the lower chamber in 2013.
On the right, Republicans are having a hard time supporting Donald Trump for a multitude of reasons.
“My 80% friend is not my 20% enemy”, Trump said, quoting President Ronald Reagan. “We’re going to ban the box, so they can be judged by their skills and talents- not by their past”, added Clinton.
Despite endorsing Ryan, Trump on Monday used his Twitter feed to acknowledge support from Nehlen, who is driving around Wisconsin in a yellow dump truck with a sign that reads “Dump Paul Ryan”.
An average of polls aggregated by Real Clear Politics showed Clinton ahead of Trump by 6.8 percentage points on Friday, up from 3.9 on August 1.
Trump told the Washington Post earlier this week he likes Ryan, “But these are frightful times for our country”.
Mr Morell said that as Russian President Vladimir Putin “played upon Mr Trump’s vulnerabilities by complimenting him”. “That is the mark of a true leader”.
After some high-profile spats with the speaker of the house and two key senators, Trump did an about face.
As of Friday, the sports-betting site Bookmaker.eu had the odds of Clinton taking the White House significantly higher than those of Donald Trump. During a radio interview with WISN’s Jay Weber on Friday morning, Ryan said he was unsure where things stood with Trump.
“We need very, very strong leadership”. “We have a very, very dishonest media”. And I’m just not quite there yet. Speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists and National Association of Hispanic Journalists in Washington, when she said: “I hope you will compare what I’m proposing to what my husb-…my opponent is talking about”.
Last Sunday, Clinton appeared on Fox News and was asked about her insistence that FBI Director James Comey confirmed that she told the American people the truth about her private email server – a statement that was proven untrue by multiple fact-checkers.
