Trump faces media amid Russian Federation reports
Donald Trump spent much of what was meant to be a press conference on his finances attacking news organizations for reporting on intelligence reports suggesting he might be compromised by Russian Federation.
Gresh Kuntzman, a journalist for NY Daily News, has “covered Trump on and off for 25 years”, and argues that the President-elect is adept at managing the press.
The president-elect and the intelligence community have repeatedly contradicted each other on last year’s hacking of Democratic groups and individuals, which the Federal Bureau of Investigation and CIA say was ordered by Russian Federation with the intention of helping put Trump in the White House.
“Probably released by “Intelligence” even knowing there is no proof, and never will be”, he said.
Trump has conceded that Moscow may have been behind the hacks but insists the intrusions had no influence on the outcome of the election. “They left”, apparently referring to the officials who briefed him, “and immediately the word got out that I had a meeting”.
The president-elect said that the report would be issued within 90 days after he enters the White House.
The president-elect also charged via Twitter that his “crooked opponents” are trying to undermine his electoral victory. As part of that briefing, officials provided Trump with a synopsis of the unsubstantiated allegations in the private report, which Clapper emphasized was not a US intelligence report.
Mr Trump acknowledged Russian Federation was likely behind the hack of the DNC.
But Mr Trump has repeatedly denied the allegations and slammed them as “fake news”. He called the dossier that makes salacious claims about him “fake news” and “phony stuff”.
“I think it’s a disgrace that information would be let out”.
Clapper said he emphasized to Trump that the report was not produced by USA intelligence agencies and that they had not judged whether the information was reliable.
The cause of the USA intelligence concerns are the suspicions of ties between Trump or his associates and the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Yediot reported.
Trump on Wednesday tweeted again, “Russia just said the unverified report paid for by political opponents is “A COMPLETE AND TOTAL FABRICATION, UTTER NONSENSE”.
On Tuesday, it was reported intelligence officials who briefed President Barack Obama and Trump last week about Russia’s possible meddling in the 2016 US presidential election included a two-page addendum detailing the unverified compromising information. Trump turned fire on the original sources of the material after slamming the media – namely CNN and BuzzFeed, the latter of which published the dossier itself – for reporting on the claims earlier this week.
There were a few allusions to a document floating around but nothing specific from it was published because the information contained in the dossier could not be independently confirmed.
The reports have deepened a rift between Mr Trump and the U.S. intelligence community.
“If people really want to know what Director Clapper had to say to Donald Trump, do not rely on Donald Trump’s tweets, rely on Director Clapper’s statement”.
