Trump fired Tillerson so US can scrap nuclear deal: Iranian minister
Trump is undoing all that, and in doing so is reinforcing the negative prejudices and stereotypes that have for so long coloured the perception of the African continent abroad.
Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters he was “perplexed” by the president’s nominee to lead the CIA and questioned Haspel’s trust over what he describes her “joyful glee” of waterboarding.
Pompeo has been considered one of the toughest talkers in terms of his North Korea position, so despite Trump’s stated intentions to negotiate, the president’s decision shows that they will not bow to the brutal dictatorship.
Paul, who was the lone GOP vote against confirming Pompeo to be CIA director in 2017, said he opposes Pompeo’s nomination to be Secretary of State because Pompeo has said that he did not consider “enhanced interrogation techniques” to be torture. The best guess is that it is ominous news.
From the first, Tillerson and Trump were the oddest of pairings. As his replacement, Trump named Mike Pompeo, the CIA director who is known as a staunch loyalist of the U.S. leader. Far more than his verbal insults, Trump’s willingness to commit large-scale forces to the region, and, unlike his predecessor, to actually authorize a missile strike in Syria, should give Kim pause.
Tillerson’s extraordinary dismissal mirrors the chaos and conflict. Both nominations must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke underwent questioning Tuesday by Senate Democrats, who accused him of spending tens of thousands of dollars on office renovations and private flights while proposing deep cuts to conservation programs.
“The State Department is responsible for helping to protect people around the world fleeing horrific violence and persecution as well as holding other governments accountable for protecting human rights”. But the rights group’s allegations against Haspel remain part of a preliminary investigation that German authorities could revive if they receive evidence that any of the parties have links to Germany.
The administration has become better at managing the initially chaotic and sometimes vicious battles within it. It is believed that Pompeo will support Trump in this, something especially notable because Trump’s May deadline for fixing its flaws approaches.
To date, more than 20 senior administration staffers have either been fired, resigned, or reassigned.
“Although you typically receive little recognition or acclaim for these sacrifices, your uncommon devotion allows hundreds of millions of Americans to live in peace and in freedom”, he said. The question is whether Mr Trump and Mr Pompeo share this world view. Talked to the president a lot. The department announced on Wednesday that Hook would travel to Vienna to participate in a meeting on Friday on the Iran nuclear deal.
While Shanahan doubts the US would pull out of the deal in the “foreseeable future”, he believes Pompeo’s hardline views may still shape policy.
The US and foreign dignitaries in Lausanne April 2, 2015 during the Iran nuclear negotiations. And if Pompeo did speak to Trump, he clearly did not dissuade him from taking the plunge, defying previous presidential convention, and meeting with Kim.
The failure to deliver those options is yet another reason Tillerson’s tenure at the State Department had to end.
