Trump fourth in Iowa State poll; Clinton has big lead
Behind Carson, Rubio took 19 percent, Trump scored 17 percent and Cruz received 14 percent in Colorado.
Republican experts are warning that Trump could do lasting damage to the GOP, and that his nomination in the party primaries would essentially hand the presidency to Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton.
The commission also rejected challenges to the ballot placement of Democrat Bernie Sanders and Republicans Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio.
New Jersey officials and journalists – including the authors of a paragraph that Trump cited – have found no basis in fact for his assertion.
“I do not remember that, and so it’s not something that was part of my recollection”, he said.
One last bit of poll data shows how Trump plays in America as a whole: According to Public Policy Polling, 46 percent of Americans think Trump is the current presidential candidate most likely to say something inappropriate at the table and ruin Thanksgiving dinner. Cullen said, before the commission chairman cut him off.
As for the Democrats, they have seen Trump’s promotion of bigotry as an opportunity to posture as sympathetic to immigrants and other minorities, despite the appalling record of the Obama administration, which has deported more immigrants than any other administration in U.S. history, built up the surveillance state well beyond the level established by Bush, and waged ferocious war against the population of the Middle East.
Cullen, in his testimony, claimed that Trump does not represent the views of the Republican Party. I certainly don’t think he’s a strong favorite, but there’s no way of really coming up with an accurate prediction of these things.
Wrenn says it’s too early to say whether Trump’s candidacy or his potential nomination will affect the GOP’s image in 2016. While more than half say shaking up Washington is their main goal, only 4 percent say “electability” matters to them. That is a double edge sword because Trump appeals to a large portion of the Republican base, and they support Trump because they believe he is what the Republican brand should be. Trump’s response? Maybe the man “should have been roughed up”, he said Sunday. No longer is The Donald being blown off as a candidate who could not possibly win, but one who very well may be leading this country next year. Some Republicans are on the brink of panic, because the Trump phenomena refuses to die, putting the GOP at risk of nominating an nearly sure loser for the November general election. “If he wins Iowa and New Hampshire, how do they stop him?” Cruz declared, “I’m a big fan of Donald Trump’s, but I’m not a fan of government registries”. But I don’t know how much more strongly the Republican Party, and frankly the entire media, could be sending that signal. And Republican voters were not as hostile to their own party’s establishment. Bernie Sanders on the Democratic side, 49.5 percent to 27.8 percent.
There have been repeated moments when Trump said something outrageous and there were predictions that this is the beginning of the end of Trump, and then he does better.
