Trump gets bump following GOP convention
Nick Mollberg plays Donald Trump and Auburn Rutledge plays Hillary Clinton during Comic-Con International 2016 in San Diego, California, July 22, 2016. She pointedly praised Republican Sen.
Clinton also used the speech to bash Trump without actually using the nominee’s name.
Mrs. Clinton, speaking to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Charlotte, N.C., cast herself as a thick-skinned leader who will take a deliberative approach to military and veteran affairs and accept the counsel of Republicans and Democrats alike.
“You will never hear me say, ‘I only listen to myself on national security, ‘” she told veterans gathered for the annual convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Perhaps most troubling for the Clinton supporters gathering in Philadelphia this week: 68 percent now say Clinton is not honest and trustworthy, her worst rating on that measure in CNN/ORC polling.
At least, 40 per cent called the speech excellent or good and about 45 per cent said Trump’s speech reflected the way they feel about things in the United States today; 48 per cent said it did not reflect their views. “America’s word has to mean something”.
The bombastic billionaire leads Hillary Clinton 44%-39% in a new CNN/ORC national poll released Monday, the first taken since the GOP held its nominating summit in Cleveland last week.
On Monday, Clinton said, “I believe he and all Americans prisoners of war are heroes and deserve the respect that that entails”. “I’m not interested in insulting people, including our military. I’m interested in healing the divisions”. Trump is tapping into American concerns amid the proliferation of terrorist attacks, warning that the approach the Obama administration is taking is failing.
The warnings proved effective at the Republican convention.
Part of the reason relates to how close voters decided the outcome in North Carolina during the last two presidential campaigns. “What we need out of this convention, too, is a clear definition of what the election is about… what kind of country they want to lead us toward”. “The question now is whether campaign events and missteps, conventions, debates, or exogenous events can shift that edge in Trump’s favor or give Clinton a bigger lead”.
The swing comes days after Clinton tapped Sen. “However, we are disappointed that Secretary Clinton did not outline a vision of reform for the VA which would greatly expand health care choice for veterans and increase accountability for employees guilty of misconduct”.
