Trump gets royal treatment in Beijing
Mr Trump’s election victory 12 months ago stunned most go China’s Americanologists, who failed, along with most U.S. political experts, to predict it.
The imperial compound, one of the most popular tourist destinations in China, was cleared of all tourists for the day. He considers me a friend.
“We may have differences from time to time”, Xi said, but both nations will gain from the benefits of increasing trade.
Mr. Xi did not return the favor. The two couples had a tea party at the Baoyun Building, or the Hall of Embodied Treasures, which now serves as an internal museum to show the history of the Forbidden City.
While Trump has publicly touted his strong rapport with Xi, attempting to leverage their personal ties into substantive progress has had mixed results. “I like him a lot”, Trump said Monday.
“We’ll find out how helpful soon”, he said.
Speaking on the second day of a trip to Beijing marked by pomp and pageantry, Trump also decried China’s “one-sided and unfair” trade surplus with the United States but told Xi “I don’t blame China”, as the two countries signed more than $250 billion in business deals.
“You can not support, you can not supply, you can not accept”, he said, calling on “every nation, including China and Russian Federation”, to fully implement recent U.N. Security Council resolutions on North Korea. Trump also introduced his son-in-law Jared Kushner to Xi. “They were watching. Nothing you can see is so lovely”. “We are looking forward to rejoining you tomorrow morning!” his first Tweet from China read.
Not all of Trump’s tweets in China were bright and cheerful.
As he exited Air Force One, Trump and his wife, Melania, were met by Chinese and U.S. dignitaries, soldiers standing stiffly at attention, a band playing martial music and children waving miniature Chinese and USA flags while chanting “Welcome, welcome”. “It’s hundreds of billions of dollars a year, anywhere from $350 billion to $504 billion, and that doesn’t include intellectual property”, Trump said.
The couples sat down in the Hall of Character Cultivation for a performance described as a selection of highlights, which opened with a swarm of brightly costumed dancing children waving peacock feathers. “Beautiful!” said Mr Trump as he and Melania posed for pictures with the heavily-madeup opera cast.
“When you play golf with someone not just once, but for two times, the person must be your favorite guy”, Abe said.
Mr Trump wants China to do more to rein in North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes, which not only threaten the security of Asia but are also beginning to possibly threaten the US.
Ahead of Mr Trump’s arrival, China’s Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang assured reporters he would be able to tweet as much as he wants, saying: “We take everything into account on receiving foreign heads of state, so you should have no reservations about Mr President’s ability to keep in touch with the outside”.
Xi said he had a deep exchange of views with Trump and reached consensus on numerous issues of mutual concern. Still Beijing had signalled earlier this week that it was cracking down on Pyongyang.
Other U.S. presidents turned to China to solve the North Korea problem too and were generally disappointed.
Qualcomm signed non-binding deals worth $12 billion with Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo, three Chinese handset makers the firm said it had “longstanding relationships” with.
He added that China is willing to significantly increase imports of USA energy and agricultural products, as well as movies.
However, the agreements were mostly non-binding memorandums of understanding rather than contracts and could take years to materialise, reported Bloomberg. A sophisticated system has been built to deny online users within China access to blocked content.
Trump said “China can fix this problem quickly and easily”, urging Beijing to cut financial links with North Korea and he also called on Russian Federation to help.
