Trump Gives Nancy Pelosi a Backhanded Compliment
Ryan, who challenged Pelosi’s House leadership position a year ago, received support from Rep. Seth Moulton.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, in particular, has come under fire. Nor have they identified a challenger.
Joe Cunningham, a Democrat running for Congress in a bid to unseat Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., tweeted a promise not to vote for Pelosi for leadership if he wins his race – just hours after announcing his bid.
The closest race in the 2016 election was that of U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, a Cincinnati Republican, who won by more than 19 points.
Those involved in the discussions described them as preliminary among like-minded lawmakers. I’m a strategic, politically astute leader. He emphasized that the group “was a diverse group from an ideological, geographic and ethnic standpoint”. But if someone like Tim Ryan becomes the head of the Democratic caucus, he will be a much less effective foil for Republican attack ads than Pelosi.
Millions of dollars in out-of-state money was poured into Georgia’s 6th Congressional District for the race to replace Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tom Price. The Democrat Jon Ossoff centered his campaign around the themes of civility and moderation.
On Tuesday evening, the latest hopes for a new Democratic rise to power was dashed in Georgia as Democratic insurgent candidate Jon Ossoff conceded defeat to Republican victor Karen Handel.
Chief among those is fundraising. Even President Trump took to Twitter, to mock the infighting between party members, saying, “I certainly hope the Democrats do not force Nancy P out”.
Rice’s sentiment was echoed by other House Democrats in recent months including Reps.
A Handel ad portrayed Ossoff – who ran on a decidedly moderate message – as a San Francisco-style liberal aligned with “Nancy Pelosi and outsiders who just don’t share our priorities”.
“When it comes to personal ambition and having fun on TV, have your fun”, Pelosi said.
The results in SC and Georgia are reasons why I love what I do, because each election is different enough to be interesting and keep everyone on their toes. “Why should I?” Pelosi began.
But Pelosi’s camp signaled she is taking the grumbling seriously.
Celebrity songstress Cher jumped into the fray, and in answer to Moulton’s tweets observed that it’s time to bring in new blood.
While Democrats argue that Republicans would have tied Ossoff to any party bogeyman, the Pelosi connection seemed to carry particular sway with the voters they needed to attract.
There are, though, reasons to believe Pelosi poses a unique political problem for Democrats.
On that point, Ryan agreed that the Democrats need to focus less on President Donald Trump and more on economic issues.
“The whole Democratic message under Pelosi is built on fantasy”, Watters said.
Pelosi “consistently polls very unfavorably”, said John Rogers, the executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee – the House GOP’s campaign arm. Goldberg commented after the latest big loss suffered by the Democrats.
There is a growing level of frustration among rank-and-file members, Ryan said, adding that the national Democratic message and brand had gone sour with the average voter, especially after a demoralizing defeat this week in a Georgia special election. Even my colleague Andrew Prokop warns that Democrats shouldn’t “sugarcoat” the result, which is “bad news” for the party.
Congressman Bill Pascrell of New Jersey says, “A loss is a loss is a loss, and there’s no excuses”. In fact, it’s hard to find much in the way of specific policy critiques of Pelosi – such as positions she’s taken or statements she’s made – that are hurting the party.
