Trump hits Harvey, NAFTA and border wall in wide-ranging morning of tweets
“We might have to put an end to it?” wrote Mr. Trump.
So now he wants American taxpayers to foot the bill, and this week he threatened to shut down the entire government if Congress doesn’t include wall funding in a debt ceiling bill that must be signed into law by September 30, when the government’s authorization to spend money runs out.
“Build that wall”, Trump said in Phoenix, echoing chants from the crowd after he’d broached the topic.
In response, the country’s foreign ministry released a statement saying Mexico would not pay for a wall or other physical barrier at the border “under any circumstances”. The initial wall investment, however, is coming from the U.S. budget, Trump said, vowing a United States government shutdown if the wall bill is not included in the new budget.
“I was glad that the president came to Arizona, in particular, his visit down to Yuma on the border”, Flake said.
The government stays open because Congress passes funding for a border wall, giving Trump what he wants. And doing that through the border wall is something that’s important.
“I really think they don’t like our country”, Trump said. In that case, Trump would have to be ready to risk the political consequences of a shutdown – consequences we know he was aware of because of something he tweeted when the government shuttered last time.
Wednesday, House Speaker Paul Ryan said he and Trump share “very legitimate concerns” about the border, but said a shutdown is “not in our interest”. The Department of Homeland Security says it would cost $22 billion – and a study by the Democratic staff of the Senate homeland security committee priced it at almost $70 billion.
President Donald Trump tweeted Sunday about a supporter’s new book, his proposed border wall, and trade deals, while southwest Texas is facing catastrophic flooding.
A closer look at Trump’s wall could suggest a way to avoid an impasse.
“What we’ll do here is go through the mechanism of getting the original initial money that we need for that capital project from Congress through an appropriations process and we’ll responsibly construct the barrier on the border”, he said.
