Trump Issues New Immigration Ban Executive Order
“That has always been America’s greatest strength”.
The low-key rollout was a contrast to the first version of the order, signed in a high-profile ceremony at the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes as Secretary of Defense James Mattis stood by Trump’s side. It has 56 other member states across the world.
The White House unveiled a new version Monday of its executive order placing temporary restrictions on immigration from several Muslim-majority countries after the previous order was blocked by the courts.
Citizens of Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Syria, and Libya will now face a 90 day suspension of visa processing as the administration works towards its goal of tougher vetting. For instance, it lays out exemptions for travelers who are legal permanent USA residents, for those who hold dual citizenship in a country not on the list, and for those who have already been granted refugee status.
Nationals of those countries will not be able to receive new visas for a 90-day period. The 90-day period applies only to people from the six countries on the new list seeking fresh USA visas.
“We should be asking about the root causes of violent acts, such as USA militarization of conflicts, and giving our attention to addressing those concrete situations”, he said in a statement.
“I would not be surprised if the government finds there’s no way to improve the vetting from some of these countries”, she said.
The Trump administration can insist, as it does, that the policy is not a Muslim ban because it does not apply to hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide.
The American- Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, in a press release said: “The administration’s attempt to tailor the order so it conforms to court rulings does not take away from the fact that this is still and Arab and Muslim Ban”. The U.S. took in 10,000 Syrian refugees a year ago. In other cases, specific cohorts of immigrants would be granted travel or visa waivers on a case-by-case basis, replacing the original order’s blanket ban. “We must continue to fight this discriminatory and unconstitutional executive action”. “And someone’s life got lost”, he said on January 31.
The US will also halt its refugee admissions programme for the next four months as the government reviews security procedures.
Trump had publicly criticised judges who ruled against him and vowed to fight the case in the Supreme Court, but later made a decision to draw up a new order with changes aimed at making it easier to defend in the courts.
He said the United States will not allow “malevolent actors using our immigration system to take American lives”. “To close our nation’s doors on those who are simply seeking safety and protection is shameful and misguided”.
“By rescinding his earlier executive order, President Trump makes one thing perfectly clear: His original travel ban was indefensible – legally, constitutionally and morally”, Ferguson said in a prepared statement. He says they’re trying to determine what sort of ramifications the new executive order will have.
“It is the president’s solemn duty to protect the American people, and with this order President Trump is exercising his rightful authority to keep our people safe”, Tillerson said as he announced the order.
