Trump, Jeb Spar Over Eminent Domain
Donald Trump strikes again!
Trump: “Jeb wants to be a tough guy tonight”.
The one candidate who hasn’t directed many shots at Rubio this week has been real-estate magnate Donald Trump, who remains the front-runner in New Hampshire even after his second-place finish in Iowa.
Eminent domain is when the government seizes a portion of private property because the seizure is deemed to be for the good of the broader public. Eminent domain is an absolute necessity for a country. Without it, you wouldn’t have roads, you wouldn’t have hospitals, you wouldn’t have anything.
“The Keystone Pipeline without eminent domain-it wouldn’t go 10 feet, OK?”
Trump said conservatives including many of his opponents say they’re against eminent domain, but they support the projects that need eminent domain to exist.
Trump also challenged Bush’s logic that eminent domain shouldn’t be used for privately-owned infrastructure. That not a public objective. “That is downright wrong”.
After Jeb attacked Donald’s unfair use of eminent domain, of course Donald had plenty to say about it. “Let me talk, let me talk”, Donald says to Jeb during his response, then putting his finger over his mouth to shush, “Quiet”. The audience wouldn’t stop booing Donald!
“That’s all of his donors and special interests out there”, Trump said, visibly irritated. “To turn this into a limousine parking lot for his casinos is not a public use”, Bush threw out.
ABC News’ David Muir asked the real estate mogul about a project in New Hampshire that would bring hydroelectric power from Canada into the Northeastern grid.
As Reason’s Damon Root wrote recently, “Trump does not just talk the talk”.
The moment that left Trump telling the audience that he didn’t need them (no, literally) happened during a heated exchange over eminent domain with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
Trump was defensive from the start, knocking the number of people who have hit him over the issue. You can’t get them. You know who has tickets for the television audience?
“You know what gives me confidence?”
“They’re booing because I don’t want their money”, he said. And I’m the only one up here that can say that. Trump said audience members were all members of the Republican establishment.
