Trump lashes out at ‘greatest witch-hunt in history’
Trump on Thursday tweeted that the move was part of “the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!”
Reacting to the appointment, Trump said a thorough investigation will prove that no such collusion took place.
You might have thought it was a bad idea for President Trump to meet with Russian officials the morning after he fired the FBI director leading an investigation into possible collusion with Russia. “I look forward to this matter concluding quickly”.
Washington’s intelligence agencies believe Moscow tried to tip November’s U.S. presidential election in favour of Mr Trump.
Republican Senator Pat Toomey wants a Democrat to be nominated to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation because “changes are needed at the White House”, a spokesman said, according to the “Pittsburgh Post-Gazette”. Mr. Comey publicly confirmed the existence of the investigation in March, telling Congress that his agents were investigating Russian efforts to influence the outcome of the presidential election and whether anyone in the Trump campaign had been involved.
“I keep wondering – something in the back of my head keeps saying to me – maybe Comey was actually trying to build an obstruction-of-justice case against the president here”, Miller added.
President Trump was hit with another set of Russia-related allegations late Fridaymoments after departing on his first foreign trip as commander-in-chief, with one report claiming the president trash-talked James Comey in a meeting with Moscow dignitaries and another saying the Russian Federation probe has reached a current White House official. It later emerged that Comey made note of Trump’s request in a memo that was saved.
Mueller is highly respected by both Democrats and Republicans, and he has served presidents of both parties. Though criminal probes can at times complicate congressional matters, legal experts said the complications would be indistinguishable from those created by the already ongoing FBI investigation. Though appointed by president George W Bush, he was asked to stay on past his 10-year term at the helm of the agency by Democratic president Barack Obama.
