Trump meets Irish PM at White House ahead of St. Patrick’s Day
Really? The reaction by Irish on social media was palpable.
“We are seeing this is coming to pass”, he said, then mentioned Bob Dylan’s famous song lyric, “You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows”.
UK Prime Minister Theresa May has said she will begin the Brexit process by the end of this month, a move that looks set to have major implications for the neighbouring Republic of Ireland.
Have literally never heard this in my entire life.
Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny on Thursday urged President Trump to help Irish people living in the USA illegally, saying they just want to “make America great”. “We should not be giving any further succour to the current administration by extending a visit to Ireland”. Nearly 40,000 people signed a petition titled “Shamrock for Trump: Not in my name” demanding that Kenny cancel the trip.
The zenith of the whole mess was an in-your-face speech by Kenny on a subject close to home: For years, Ireland’s estimated 25,000 undocumented immigrants have been fighting for legalization in what they view as “our shared struggle” on both sides of the ocean.
“It is fitting that we gather here each year to celebrate Saint Patrick and his legacy”, said Kenny.
“There are millions out there who want to play their part for America – if you like, who want to make America great”, he said, using Trump’s own campaign slogan as the ultimate troll.
Many tweeters instantly pointed out that the words actually came from a poem by Nigerian poet Albashir Adam Alhassan.
The Nigerian, a Katsina-based banker by name Albasheer Adam Alhassan, got wind of it when his sister informed him. “Also, a proverb is not a poem”.
Speaking after Trump at the luncheon, Kenny showed off his country’s famed wit, saying that he “just saw the president of the United States read from his script”.
There is also speculation that the U.S. president may visit Northern Ireland, possibly for the Open golf championship in Portrush in 2019.
“Americans, especially American Irish, always try to endear ourselves to the Irish”.
The things that make you glad.
This isn’t the first time Kenny has come after Trump.
Most recently, Cuomo announced that Stewart Airport in Orange County would provide service to Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Dublin and Shannon in Ireland.
As people were quick to point out, golf originated in Scotland, not Ireland.
