Trump nails it in New Hampshire; Kasich snags second
While Clinton remains the favourite in the national race for the Democratic nomination, the win by the Vermont senator could be a springboard into a competitive, drawn-out primary campaign.
For Trump, the brash real estate magnate and television personality who has never run for public office, the win was an important rebound after his loss to Texas Sen.
Mr Trump, now that he has his much desired first victory, will have to maintain his strong popular lead to prevent the party establishment from throwing its weight behind a more moderate candidate like Marco Rubio or even John Kasich.
“We are going to make America so great again”, Trump told a raucous crowd.
Sanders needed to win big if he had any chance at all of winning his party’s nomination because New Hampshire played to all of his strengths. However, Tuesday’s vote did little to clarify who that candidate might be. The next primary races are in Nevada and SC later this month.
Almost two-thirds of New Hampshire voters agreed the U.S. should temporarily ban Muslims who are not American citizens from entering the country. The victory came after a disappointing second place finish in Iowa. “It’s on me. I did not – I did not do well on Saturday night”.
Sanders had 60 per cent of the vote based on 66 per cent of the vote, ahead of former Secretary of State Clinton, who had 38 per cent.
The Republican voters, the Democratic voters, and the Independent voters of New Hampshire did in 2016 what they’ve been doing for decades; they shaped the race for president and cemented the narrative that has been emerging all year.

Rubio had dismissed this idea earlier in the day, while shaking hands outside a polling location in Derry, New Hampshire.
On the Democratic side, Sanders won a majority of both men and women, after Clinton received a plurality of women’s votes in 2008, and a majority of their support last week in Iowa.
It’s a tough blow for a candidate whose campaign had trouble from the start about raising money and building support in a crowded field dominated by Trump.
These delegates officially elect the candidate at their respective party’s national convention.
