Trump names Obamacare critic Tom Price to key role
Jason Miller tells Fox Business Network that Trump is expected to name the person to his Cabinet Tuesday afternoon.
But House Minority Whip, Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland, released a statement saying he was “deeply concerned” about McCarthy moving ahead with a plan to repeal the law with no strategy to address those who could lose coverage.
Well, an often overlooked part of Obamacare is a test kitchen within the Department of Health and Human Services that experiments with new ways for the government to pay for some expensive and frequently used health care services, including those three.
He might have greater impact on the fate of “Obamacare” through the department’s administrative and regulatory powers.
Price, an early Trump supporter from the U.S. House of Representatives, is now the chairman of the budget committee. Democrats were quick to attack it.
“Democrats will strongly oppose these efforts, and we will continue working to ensure that affordable health coverage is accessible to all Americans”, Hoyer said.
Georgia Congressman Tom Price, an orthopedic surgeon, is his choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
Price then spent four terms in the Georgia State Senate.
His alternative, the misleadingly named Empowering Patients First Act, is the usual privatizer’s combination of tax credits and health savings accounts, an absurd concept for the poor and the struggling middle class. The credit starts at $1,200 a year and rises with age, but isn’t adjusted for income.
Six years after Obamacare became law, congressional Republicans have voted dozens of times to repeal it in part or full, but still haven’t unified behind legislation to replace it.
Insurers could resume some of the practices that Obamacare now prohibits – like selling bare-bones plans and, in some cases, denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. These proposals are included in Ryan’s plan.
“If Price had his way, millions of women could be cut off from Planned Parenthood’s preventive health services like birth control, cancer screenings and STD tests”, Richards said. Namely, that Trump wants to not merely erase Obamacare, but actually steal this bit of President Obama’s legacy by passing the health care reform that American consumers actually need.
The 2010 healthcare overhaul, aimed at expanding insurance coverage to millions more Americans, triggered a long, bitter fight between the White House and congressional Republicans, who said it created unwarranted government intervention in personal healthcare and private industry. For their Medicare patients, the project requires a single bundled payment to cover the cost of these procedures, including in-patient and post-operative care, instead of separate payments for each doctor, hospital or nursing home visit. Critics are concerned that this would leave Medicare participants footing more of the bill.
The average individual policy cost $6,435 in 2016, while the family premium was $18,142, according to the 2016 Kaiser/HRET Employer Health Benefits report.
Kevin Lucia, a research professor at Georgetown’s Health Policy Institute, says the insurance offered under Obamacare has more financial protections than pre-ACA policies.
Verma helped Pence, the IN governor, add conservative pieces to Medicaid coverage for the state’s poor by requiring beneficiaries to make contributions to health savings accounts.
Vice President-elect Mike Pence, chairman of the transition, suggested that more announcements are coming soon. The plan seeks to make health insurance available to individuals with pre- existing medical conditions by helping states set up new “high-risk” pools or other programs for such enrollees, and sets new rules allowing insurers to sell policies across state lines. Trump said during the campaign that he wants to get rid of the law.
“This pick is quite consistent with President-Elect Trump’s commitment to repeal the Affordable Care Act”, said Larry Levitt, senior vice president at the Kaiser Family Foundation. “And he knows the ins and outs of how Congress works, which could prove important as we enter another big legislative debate over the future of health care”.
Trump’s nominee to oversee Medicare and Medicaid – health policy consultant Seema Verma – was a top adviser on Indiana’s conservative experiment with Medicaid, as well as assisting other GOP-led states.
