Trump not on Minnesota ballot – yet
For non-major party candidates, the deadline has already passed.
Earlier in the month, McMullin was endorsed by the executive committee of the Independence Party of Minnesota. Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine are on the Democratic ticket in the North Star State, while Libertarian Gary Johnson, the Green Party’s Jill Stein, and even Independent Never Trumper Evan McMullin are also all set.
“Chairman Keith Downey completed his legal requirements of submitting the names of the nominees along with nominees for Elector and Alternate Elector in advance of next week’s filing deadline”, the statement said. If he can’t even get his name on the ballot in Minnesota, Donald Trump can’t be trusted to run the country.
The Minnesota Republican party has responded by saying that they have “appointed” alternate electors, however Brodkorb contends that under Minnesota’s constitution, these appointments do not hold water.
Well, the state GOP has had its issues over the past few years, and this looks like just more of the same.
After hours of ringing alarm bells in national GOP circles over whether Donald Trump is in danger of not getting on Minnesota’s presidential ballot, the Trump campaign says everything is in working order and voters will have a chance to cast their ballot for the brash tycoon in November. They’re attempting to solve this by calling a meeting of the state committee to certify the electors, which isn’t exactly Hoyle in regard to the party’s constitution, as Brodkorb points out.
Will the conflict with internal rules mean that Trump won’t be on the Minnesota ballot?
Trump suggested last week that he could win Minnesota, something a Republican has not done since 1972. Assuming the state committee gets its act together and files the paperwork by Monday, they will nearly certainly accept it.
“The Republican Party of Minnesota has indicated to us they would provide that today”, Secretary of State spokesman Ryan Furlong said in an email Thursday morning.
