Trump opponents try to beat him at the Electoral College
And it is this mix and rationalization of popular votes and Electoral College votes that strives to strike a just balance in the American presidential election process, between the power of the individual vote and the need to give a voice to smaller, less populated states.
The ballots are in, the votes have been cast, and the verdict is final-Donald Trump is the new president-elect, winning over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
The electoral college is a part of the Constitution.
The Electoral College is no way to pick a president.
Normally, the victor of the nationwide popular vote also wins the majority of the electors’ votes.
Four electors told The Arizona Republic Thursday that over the past week or so, they’ve been hit with thousands of emails, phone calls and letters sent to their work and homes. The unfair, arcane Electoral College awards states to candidates in a winner-take-all system.
In April of 2016, Mr. Trump has also stated that “our republican system is absolutely rigged” at a campaign event in upstate NY.
In 2012, Trump denounced the electoral college in a tweet, calling it a “disaster for democracy”.
That spawned an attempt to overturn or change the electoral vote to better reflect the popular vote.
There are 538 electors across the naÂtion, and Trump needs 270 of them to become president. Denizens of “fly-over” territory might harbor continuing irritation over their inability to elect a president despite generating huge popular vote majorities.
The most recent instance of a “faithless” elector came in 2004, when one Minnesota elector refused to vote for then-Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, who won Minnesota, casting his or her presidential ballot for John Edwards – Kerry’s own running mate.
As of November 15, Clinton has 61,329,657 votes and Trump has 60,530,867. If you think political divisions are sharp now, just wait until every vote and every official is a national one.
If Hillary Clinton had been elected based only on the popular vote, she still would have lost big time in most areas of the country. Republicans would spend all their time trying to run up their numbers in Texas and other southern states. In both instance, each state has but one vote. Since 2007, 10 states and the District of Columbia have signed onto the Compact, and it’s now sitting at a total of 165 electoral votes, about 61 percent of the way to its goal of 270.
This seems to be the common consensus among those in the Hip Hop community, however one rapper okay with Donald Trump becoming president is Kanye West it seems. The Office of the Federal Register administers the Electoral College. So they are harassing electors with a constant barrage of emails, phone calls, letters, and social media posts, sometimes evening visiting their homes. Pakistan is another. Many countries have direct elections, while others such as the United Kingdom have monarchs as heads of state, directly electing their legislature or parliament. Because at least 290 electors voting in December will be Republicans, the petitioners encouraging them to vote for Clinton instead would have to convince them to abandon their party.
That’s irrelevant according to the U.S. Constitution; every Government 101 textbook makes clear that the president technically isn’t elected by a direct vote of the people.
