Trump, Pence talk to ’60 Minutes’
A separate campaign development has seen 150 technology industry leaders sign an open letter saying a Trump presidency would be a “disaster for innovation”. On Friday afternoon, Gingrich said he had not been told personally by Trump that Pence, Indiana’s governor, had been chosen as the Republican vice presidential pick.

As a conservative talk-radio host in the 1990s, Mike Pence described himself as “Rush Limbaugh on decaf”.
“We love IN, we love our country”, he said. “Mike Pence is that man”.
For Pence, a former six-term congressman, Trump’s selection offers a return to national politics after his embrace as governor of conservative social issues sidelined his own presidential ambitions.

Just as Trump was settling on Pence, Republicans gathering in Cleveland essentially quelled the movement to oust Trump at the convention, all but assuring he’ll be the GOP nominee. Pence signed Indiana’s religious freedom restoration act that was mostly rescinded after LGBT groups called it a veiled attempt to legalize discrimination.
Asked about his support for the invasion of Iraq, which Trump has said was a mistake, Pence said reasonable people can disagree on whether the invasion was the right thing to do.
So the verdict that Pence is probably the best Trump could do is double-edged. But he isn’t necessarily the type of pick who will broaden support within the different factions of the party.
Pence, by contrast, endorsed Ted Cruz for the GOP nomination.
“I think it’s amusing”, he said.
In office, Pence has pursued these principles. “Mike’s leadership in IN and Congress make him more than ready for the position of vice president”. Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, a Trump detractor, served with Pence in the House and has a close relationship with him. It was the time when they opposed, unsuccessfully, the stimulus package and Obamacare, among other measures the newly elected Obama proposed.

Trump had faced a midday Friday deadline to announce Pence because the governor had to declare by then whether he would be on the ballot in his home state for re-election. Few Republicans likely would have significant problems with him on any major policy question.

In a further blow to workers’ rights, Pence lent his support to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, saying that the deal would allow IN to “enjoy increased market access and fairly compete on the world stage”.
A favorite quote highlights how Pence might smooth some of the sharp corners of the Trump campaign and its supporters.

In choosing Mr Pence, Mr Trump appears to be looking past their numerous policy differences. “And is running into the arms of a chaotic candidate”, he said, citing the number of Republicans who have distanced themselves from Trump. Trump conceded that one of the reasons he’d selected Pence was to promote unity within the Republican Party, left deeply fractured by Trump’s ascent.
