Trump picks wealthy activist for education secretary
For too long, the educational status quo has failed too many children. DeVos, like Trump, is new to government but has spent decades working to change America’s system of public education. But, thinking more broadly, what we are trying to do is tear down the mindset that assigns students to a school based exclusively on the ZIP Code of their family’s home. DeVos, who earned a bachelor of arts degree in the economics group at Calvin, is the first Calvin College graduate chosen to serve in the Cabinet of the President of the United States.
Betsy has been a staunch advocate for school choice, which she says allows parents to send their kids to the best school, not just the one nearest them. Like many education philanthropists, she argues that children’s ZIP codes should not confine them to failing schools.
“The Michigan work tells us that she’s pro-vouchers, pro -charters”, said Jim McNiece, also on the Kansas State Board of Education.
As speculation swirled Tuesday that DeVos might snag the top education job, conservative opponents of Common Core began to warn Trump away from DeVos. And he wants to invest some 20 billion in federal money toward choice programs for low-income students.
Those advocating for charter schools, which are not unionized, are at odds with teachers unions.
“The American federation of teachers is probably the single most reactionary organization in American life”, he said.
Trump calls DeVos “a brilliant and passionate education advocate”.
DeVos is an education activist from MI who has also chaired the state’s Republican party. DeVos’ husband, Dick, is an heir to the Amway fortune and a former president of the company. “It is a betrayal of the promise that Donald Trump made to get rid of Common Core, make education local and listen to the forgotten men and women of the United States, particularly parents”.
Krauthammer said that picking Devos would “be an opportunity to demonstrate that conservative ideas can work if implemented and I think it showed seriousness about policy, which has not been a strong point for the President-elect”.
Shortly before the November 8 election, she said that she was not enthusiastic about the choice between Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton to take over the White House when President Barack Obama’s term ends in January, but that she would vote for Trump.
Among those he has interviewed is 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who repeatedly denounced Trump during the 2016 campaign. Betsy’s appointment will mean great things for MI and for children around the nation as she takes her no-nonsense commitment to empowering parents to the highest levels in Washington.
