Trump pushes for vote to repeal Obamacare
That urging contradicts Republican leaders who have been cautioning that overhauling the massive health care law would take time. “Too many feel they’re worse off than they were before Obamacare”.
On Sunday, Reince Priebus, Trump’s incoming chief of staff, said repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act in one action would be “ideal”, but it “may take time” to get all elements of the health care law’s alternative ready.
With Donald Trump just 12 days from entering the White House, Republicans have positioned a repeal of Obama’s prized health care statute atop their congressional agenda.
Many want to gut the law, but repealing many of its taxes would add to the deficit and eliminate a source of revenue needed to pay for a two- or three-year transition, during which Republicans would try to devise a new health-care system. Democrats are happy to return the favor. Former Rep. Tom Price, nominated to be Health and Human Services secretary, has an “Empowering Patients First” plan. They campaigned on the promise of immediate repeal, even though the program has just finished its largest signup period ever.
He also floated this idea: Start referring to the GOP’s new plan as “Trumpcare”.
If that piece of ACA in particular goes away, Thomas said, “I think it will have a devastating effect”.
Among the differences Republicans are struggling with are how to treat states that expanded Medicaid under Obamacare – a priority for red-state senators like Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia – and whether to immediately repeal all of the Obamacare taxes or keep some of them in place for now to ensure funding for a robust replacement. “They have never, ever, accepted an invitation for that”, Durbin said. Then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi famously (and foolishly) told members they’d have to vote for the bill before they could learn what was in it. Collins said in a statement today. Of those who want to see the law repealed, 28 percent say they want lawmakers to wait until the details of a replacement plan have been announced.
Senator Bob Corker, who introduced legislation last night to bump back the timeline on repeal budget items said he was “doing a public service by issuing caution”.
Total debate on the budget is limited to 50 hours, but that doesn’t count against the time lawmakers need to offer amendments. “Not one of us was asked one thing about that healthcare bill”. Yes, the GOP is in a hurry to rid the nation of Obamacare.
After the resolution passes, Congress must pass a separate budget bill to repeal major aspects of the law – something that can not be filibustered by Democrats under the rules of the Senate. It’s unclear what new provisions – if any – the GOP will ultimately include in the repeal bill.
But for some lawmakers, especially those who signed pledges not to raise taxes, it may be politically hard to find ways to increase revenue for a replacement plan.
“It will be repeal and replace”.
In the midst of the recent presidential election results, many of us are wondering what the future will look like, including the future of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
