Trump reveals few details on “extreme vetting” of immigrants
A prominent United States journalist, James Fallows of The Atlantic magazine, suggested Mr Trump’s very criticism reflected a degree of desperation, tweeting: “I’ve seen winning campaigns and losing ones”.
The 70-year-old real estate tycoon said his administration will aggressively pursue joint and coalition military operations to crush and destroy ISIS.
Manafort, who has had several worldwide clients including Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos, denied any wrongdoing.
He pledged to work with any nations willing to help the USA defeat the Islamic State, welcoming alliances from any country that shared the mission to destroy “radical Islamic terrorism”, regardless of other ideological beliefs.
Under Trump’s new immigration policy, the government would use questionnaires, social media, interviews with friends and family or other means to determine if applicants support American values like tolerance and pluralism.
The GOP presidential nominee has made stricter immigration measures a central part of his proposals for defeating the Islamic State – a battle he said Monday is akin to the struggle against communism during the Cold War. “The time is overdue to develop a new screening test for the threats we face today”, Trump said. “Our new approach – which must be shared by both parties in America, by our allies overseas and by our friends in the Middle East – must be to halt the spread of radical Islam”, Trump said in a major policy speech on defeating “radical Islam” in Ohio.
Pennsylvania’s attorney general was convicted of 9 charges related to her leaking grand jury information about a political rival and then lying about it.
“Those who do not believe in our Constitution, or who support bigotry and hatred, will not be admitted for immigration into the country”, Trump said.
Obama, Clinton and top USA officials have warned against using that kind of language to describe the conflict, arguing that it plays into militants’ hands. “If we don’t control the numbers, we can’t perform adequate screening”, Trump said. Harry Reid has his way, Republican nominee Donald Trump would have to answer questions like these by taking the test required of anyone wishing to become a naturalized USA citizen.
While his plan doesn’t appear to explicitly call for a ban to block all Muslims from the U.S., Trump will repeat his proposal to suspend immigration for people coming from countries “with a history of exporting terrorism and where adequate screening can not be performed”.
That proposal raised numerous questions that the campaign never clarified, including whether it would apply to citizens of countries like France, Israel, or Ireland, which have suffered recent and past attacks.
The billionaire initially proposed a blanket ban on all Muslims but has changed it to one that is based on an unspecified list of countries that export terror. But aides say the campaign needs access to unreleased Department of Homeland Security data to assess exactly where the most serious threats lie.
