Trump’s budget could impact Meals on Wheels

It is, in many respects, a sort of “greatest hits” compilation of conservative prescriptions for paying for a big defense-spending increase with targeted and general cuts in nondefense discretionary programs – domestic spending that is not in one of the big entitlement programs.

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said Meals on Wheels is a program that is “not showing any results”. Those hoping that Trump will bring back jobs better hope that he brings back the exact same jobs they already know, because funds for education and job training are gone.

At an afternoon press briefing at the White House, budget director Mick Mulvaney said many states use CDBG money to fund the programs.

While Trump didn’t cut funding for the Agriculture Department’s food safety and inspection service, which looks at things like our meat, chicken, and egg products, another key agency remains uncertain.

The biggest cuts would see the Environmental Protection Agency funding reduced by nearly 30 percent, the State Department and Department of Agriculture cut by 29 percent each, the Department of Health and Human Services – which oversees Medicare and Medicaid – slashed by 23 percent and the Department of Labour funding diminished by 21 percent.

“We’re absolutely reducing funding to the United Nations and to the various foreign aid programs including those run by the United Nations and other agencies”. “There is no long-standing constituency for food safety”.

The plan calls for a $54 billion or 10 percent jump in defense spending as well as a 7 percent increase in spending for the Department of Homeland Security.

Funding will, at least in part, stem from those other programs being slashed in the budget proposal, as well as from American taxpayers.
