Trump’s health care bill versus Obamacare: What’s in, what’s out
“Even in its early stages, this bill represents a significant improvement over Obamacare”, he said in prepared remarks. “I try not to get in his business, and I don’t appreciate him getting in my business”.
McCarthy’s comments reflect both the predictions of health-care analysts, and the complex method that the GOP is using to repeal and replacement Obamacare.
Republicans said they had asked the CBO to “score” the bill – provide a preliminary estimate on its cost – and expect to have that analysis by the time it hits the house floor.
The Republican proposal loosens restrictions on the coverage insurers can offer.
In states that expanded Medicaid, people who are eligible can continue to enroll until January 1, 2020, and those states would continue to benefit from the federal government paying a greater share of the health costs of those beneficiaries. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already said that he will bring a House-passed bill directly to the Senate floor, bypassing the traditional committee evaluation process, to expedite passage.
Republicans plan to move ahead with the first steps of considering the bill in committee without such a budget score.
In addition, the bill would probably lead to more plans offering large deductibles before insurance kicks in to help cover medical expenses, Leavitt says.
Long-awaited legislation to dismantle Obamacare was unwrapped on Monday by U.S. Republicans, who called for ending health insurance mandates and rolling back extra healthcare funding for the poor in a package that drew immediate fire from Democrats. As under Obamacare, children will be able to stay on their parents’ health insurance until they turn 26. More than 700,000 Ohioans have signed-up for Medicaid coverage under Obamacare. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price and other key Republicans told reporters the GOP bill returns health-coverage decisions to individuals and families, and denounced Democratic-stoked fears of wholesale drops in coverage as exaggerated.
2017 “would be a disaster for Obamacare”, Trump said. Analysts have said it would increase the deficit and cause millions to lose coverage, particularly if the ACA’s Medicaid expansion is rolled back.
They believe if they start from scratch, they can draft a more conservative health care plan rather than trying to negotiate around current Obamacare policies.
“Would they (Republicans) accept the expansion of Medicaid?”
It’ll allow insurers to charge older people up to five times as much as younger ones, which is likely why AARP is opposed to it. “It means that it’s probably not going to pass in the form that we’re talking about today”.
“This bill does not keep the promises of reducing costs and expanding coverage”, said Dr. Mark Shields, retired senior medical director for Advocate Physician Partners in IL.
“They made a promise to the American people that they would fully repeal this law”, Phillips said.
