Trump’s kids won’t have formal White House roles, but ethics questions remain
The possibility that Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, could fill a senior position in the White House raises thorny legal questions – one of which is whether it would run afoul of a federal anti-nepotism statute.
But the legislation appears to be a lot less clear when it comes to White House advisor positions. “It’s not just appropriate, necessary”.
“Nepotism practices undermine the credibility of public officials, public confidence in government”, said Kathleen Clark, a law professor at Washington University in St. Louis.
Mr Kushner, an Orthodox Jew who was born and raised in Livingston, New Jersey, was also known to have clashed with Mr Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewindowski, who was sacked in June.

Trump’s outreach to Haley and Romney, seemed to demonstrate a possible willingness to assemble a team of rivals in his government – which would be a surprising pivot for a man who wrote in his 1997 book “The Art of the Comeback” that one of his maxims was to “get even” and that he believed “in an eye for an eye”.
United States nepotism law shows public officials can not “appoint, employ, promote, advance, or advocate for appointment, employment, promotion, or advancement” their relatives into an agency which they are serving in or control.

Trump, meanwhile, has said he plans for his adult children to manage his business dealings once he takes office in January.
“I know the Bush sons were very involved in their father’s administration”, she said, referring specifically to former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. “You don’t want the White House to look like a family business”.

In the end it could be Kushner who would face the highest risk if accepted into any kind of government role.
