Trump’s reckless call to ‘Second Amendment people’
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Wednesday chided Donald Trump for making “casual comments” the day before that she said amounted to inciting violence – and argued the episode is another reason Republicans should support her.
The New York Daily News and the Donald Trump campaign have not seen eye-to-eye.
Sessions told CNN Trump’s comments had nothing to do with violence but rather a call for Second Amendment supporters to vote. But the former mayor believes that if Trump meant to talk about a Clinton assassination, he wouldn’t have done so in a roundabout way that needed interpretation. By seeming to encourage armed insurrection against a Hillary Clinton administration, Trump has recklessly magnified the danger of his previous claim that the election is being “rigged” against him.
Was Trump suggesting gun owners take matters into their own hands if Clinton wins the White House? Trump later told Fox News he was only talking about their “political” power – and saying of the media coverage: “Give me a break”. “You shouldn’t joke about something like that”. He doesn’t understand the basic requirements of being president of the United States.
“It’s called the power of unification – 2nd Amendment people have wonderful spirit and are tremendously unified, which gives them great political power”, the Trump campaign said in its statement. “Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know”, he continued.
“You aren’t just responsible for what you say”, Gen. Michael Hayden, a former Central Intelligence Agency director, said in response to Mr. Trump’s remark.
In a late-afternoon tweet, Trump himself denied the story. In Ohio, a competitive state coveted by both candidates, Trump’s comments struck some of those questioned in a focus group of voters the wrong way.
Speaking at the University of North Carolina, the Republican presidential nominee, 70, discussed the possibility of the Democratic presidential nominee, 68, appointing liberal Supreme Court justices should she get elected.
Trump did try to put one other simmering dispute to rest – at least temporarily. Trump has complained previously that two debates are scheduled during NFL football games.
