Trump says he’s meeting with NRA about gun laws after Orlando shooting
Clinton, June 13 (5:14 mark): “And I still am just totally bewildered by the Republican Congress’ refusal to block suspected terrorists from buying guns who are on the no-fly list”.
Although Mr Trump boasts how the NRA gave him an early endorsement, many on the right are still suspicious of the man who once supported an assault weapons ban. Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, whose agency issues state concealed-weapons permits and licenses for security guards, said Mateen had a “clean criminal record” and had passed a background check.
In September 2014, the director of the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Center told a congressional subcommittee there were about 800,000 names on the official, consolidated terror watch list – a database of known and suspected terrorists that is not made public – including both Americans and foreigners.
Trump frequently declares that he is one of the nation’s biggest supporters of the 2nd Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear firearms, and he often warns his supporters that Clinton aims to take away their guns. “We will share details at the appropriate time”.
“It is very clear to me that when a person has to change magazines and can not fire so many bullets so quickly, people have a chance to escape”, said Amanda Wilcox, a volunteer for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, who said her daughter was killed by a shooter using a high-capacity magazine.
Yet here we are again, mourning innocent people cut down by a killer with a gun.
The shooter, Omar Mateen, reportedly called 911 during the attack to pledge his allegiance to ISIS. Some 16,000 of its names comprised the government’s no-fly list in 2011, the Federal Bureau of Investigation says. According to a US intelligence source, he was not listed on a current terror watch list. Rhode Island Democratic Rep. David Cicilline, who has openly gay, unveiled a bill recently to add this new restriction, and Pennsylvania Democratic Sen.
But the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights advocates say the slate of bills will do nothing to improve Californians’ safety and will instead create cumbersome new rules for law-abiding gun owners that limit their Second Amendment rights. In an interview on ABC in November after a terror attack in Paris, George Stephanopoulus asked “Mr. Trump, yes or no, should someone on the terror watch list be allowed to buy a gun?”
The group was founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a longtime proponent of expanded background checks and other measures aimed at reducing gun violence. The same proposal, authored by California Sen. Democrats in Congress were apoplectic as Republican leadership thwarted their legislative proposals.
Cox also voiced backing for legislation offered in December by Cornyn, who proposed to put gun sales on hold for 72 hours for people on watch lists.
Mateen purchased his firearms legally, According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). She devoted most of it to the terror attack in Orlando and strongly called for stricter gun controls.
He said, “I think you’re going to have a very good result”.
