Trump says immigration speech coming Wednesday in Arizona
“What I think is that Donald Trump understands that with every position that is taken and as you get closer to the White House, a degree of humanity and decency is part of every decision that needs to be made”, the RNC chair replied.
It’s been a long and sometimes puzzling journey to this point for Trump, who defeated 16 Republican opponents while promising to be the toughest on illegal immigration. Trump even questioned whether those born in the United States to people here illegally are citizens – even though they have automatically been considered citizens since the adoption of the constitution’s 14th Amendment in 1868. He suggested that maybe people who’ve been in this country for years should be allowed to stay if they pay back taxes. But none could address whether Trump still favored a deportation force.
Trump, who rebooted his campaign two weeks ago by hiring Breitbart News executive as campaign CEO and promoting pollster Kellyanne Conway to campaign manager, suddenly appears eager to play catch-up.
MSNBC host Chuck Todd asked Priebus if Donald Trump had recently somewhat moderated his tone on immigration because he realized Latino voters may be put off by his calls to deport undocumented immigrants en masse.
The speech has been rescheduled at least once.
They said Trump’s immigration policy will be humane, and insisted he has not been wavering on the issue.
Trump’s campaign earlier had scheduled the speech for last Thursday, but canceled it as he wrestled with the complex policy.
Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) was asked about Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s assertion that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is a bigot during an interview Sunday on ABC’s “This Week”. The campaign later blamed a staff error for a report that the immigration speech would be delivered in Phoenix on August 31.
But it’s far from clear what he’ll say, apparently even to his top supporters.
“Donald Trump will articulate what we do with the people who are here”, Pence said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union”.
