Trump seeks cancellation of Air Force One order
The legendary Air Force One jets – light blue and white liveried, with “United States of America” emblazoned on the fuselage and an American flag on the tail – are a powerful symbol of U.S. might. It is also equipped with a number of never discussed security features.
Here’s a look at Trump’s claims about Air Force One, one of the most recognized symbols of the American presidency.
The Air Force decided on Boeing as the sole-source provider in early 2015.
All presidents since Ronald Reagan have filed public financial disclosures in their first year in office, though they weren’t required to do so until their second year.
The new planes aren’t expected to be ready to fly until 2022. Over the next few years, the Air Force expects “this number to change as the program matures with the completion of risk reduction activities”, it said in a statement.
The new Boeing 747-8 planes were due to be 240ft long, with a wing span of 224ft.
Trump later took a question during a brief impromptu news conference at Trump Tower in Manhattan, and repeated the message: “The plane is totally out of control”. Air Force One also has seating for reporters; Trump generally does not allow the press on his own plane. “I spoke to a terrific guy yesterday, the head of Boeing, and I think we’re going to work it out, but you know, that’s what I’m here for, I’m going to negotiate prices”. “We want Boeing to make a lot of money, but not that much money”, as stated by the President-elect Donald Trump.
Trump said Wednesday that “Boeing is going to be a tremendous beneficiary of” lower taxes.
United States President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday said that he wants to cancel the orders for the Air Force One presidential planes, in an attempt to cut government costs.
According to Boeing, its current deal for Air Force One development is worth $170 million. The following month, Trump said during his presidential campaign that he would intervene and stop the outsourcing if he’s elected as the president.
The Air Force did not respond right away to Trump’s complaint about the planes’ cost. And building the plane, with its top-secret communications and defenses against attacks, runs in the billions of dollars. “Cancel order!”, the President-Elect said in a tweet. A new contract has since been drawn up.
Boeing has built the plane for every US President since Franklin Roosevelt.
It is unclear what motivated Mr. Trump’s Twitter post.
That’s true, but the two modified Boeing 747s the president uses for the bulk of his travels are getting older and breaking down more often, officials say.
The news of the June stock sale came after Miller was asked if the president-elect still held shares in Boeing.
In addition, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Trump’s choice to be ambassador to the United Nations, has no foreign policy experience.
