Trump Signs New Travel Ban Against Six Nations, Iraq Not on List
Hawaii plans to file its amended lawsuit on Wednesday.
Washington state’s announcement comes just one day after Hawaii became the first state to sue Trump over the revised travel ban. The new order also avoids the preferential treatment offered to Christian refugees in the earlier order. Legal experts said the new ban would be harder to challenge because it affects fewer people living in the United States and allows more exemptions to protect them. If upheld, this would block federal employees nationwide from enforcing the travel ban. “This is effectively a Muslim ban”.
The order, which will go into effect on March 16, will also suspend the nation’s refugee program for 120 days.
To avoid the same chaos, the new order does not apply to green card-holding permanent residents or those who already have valid visas. According to the Huffington Post, Elshikh’s mother-in-law lives in Syria and the ban could prevent her from traveling to the U.S.
Here are five things you need to know about the new executive order.
Trump signed his original executive order in late January, sparking confusion and anger as travelers were detained at USA airports and barred from boarding flights at foreign airports. But the judges referred to the states’ argument as serious and significant.
“But for this particular travel ban, he’s going to run into this problem over and over again”.
“Americans have long played a crucial role in promoting global stability while simultaneously exemplifying the highest humanitarian ideals, from support for refugee emergencies overseas, to welcoming some of the most vulnerable refugee families in the United States to rebuild their lives in safety, freedom and dignity”, he said. Half were native-born US citizens. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman in a statement called the executive order “a Muslim ban by another name”.
Somalia and Sudan both criticised the ban as well, saying their nationals added to America’s community rather than detracted from it. Trump has argued that the ban is needed to prevent Islamic State and Al Qaeda fighters from reaching US soil. “They’ve had six weeks since the original order came out to collect and collate data and all the alleged instances that could justify this, and this is the best they could come up with”.
Minnesota is also continuing to pursue the Seattle case alongside Washington. The judges noted that some people would not enter state universities or join the faculty at those universities, causing real harm for the states. Chin says the tourism angle is unique because the state relies heavily on visitors and Hawaii officials have a right to defend the economy.
