Trump stands by his unfounded wiretapping claims
Devin Nunes is chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, which means he’s in charge of investigating President Trump’s evidence-free allegation that President Barack Obama wiretapped his offices.
House Intelligence Comittee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) showed fealty to President Trump on Tuesday, deriding the widespread assessment by the intelligence community that Russian Federation intentionally tried to help Trump win the 2016 election while promising to investigate whether Trump campaign officials were investigated by government agencies. Nunes previously said his panel would examine the evidence.
Trump, who is under significant scrutiny for his administration’s contacts with Russian Federation before he took office, offered no evidence to support his claims Saturday morning.
All we’re saying is, let’s take a closer look. “I think a lot of the things he says, I think you guys sometimes take literally”. “They have asked us to look into it, but we were going to look into it anyway”.
The chairman of the House intelligence committee said he does not mind that President Donald Trump is not all “lawyered up” when using Twitter, but he does wish the president was clearer when he tweets. In the past he has claimed millions of people voted illegally in the November election; Obama was not born in the United States; thousands of Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the 9/11 attacks; Sweden was hit by a major terrorist attack on February 17; the father of Sen.
If there is evidence of any wrongdoing that requires further investigation, the intelligence committees can be expected to call for a special prosecutor to follow up. At a separate news conference, he welcomed the chance to investigate the president’s accusation against his predecessor.
Trump gave no evidence for his claim, the latest twist in a controversy over ties between Trump associates and Russian Federation that has dogged the early days of his presidency.
“We should be able to determine in fairly short order whether these accusations are true or false”, he said. In mid January, the New York Times revealed that the FBI was conducting a “counter-intelligence” investigation focusing on three Trump associates: former campaign aides Paul Manafort, Carter Page, and Roger Stone.
A cardinal rule of the Obama Administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice, Kevin Lewis, a spokesman for Obama, said.
Nunes said that Flynn was a “tangent” to the investigation but that he would welcome Flynn’s testimony if he wanted to participate.
This morning, on Good Morning America, George Stephanopoulos also had to interrupt Huckabee Sanders that she can’t just puts words in front of each other in whatever form she sees fit without regard for, you know, facts. He’s been doing this for a little over a year.
Trump then questions in a Tweet on Saturday morning if this is legal and even makes analogies to Nixon/Watergate.
“Trump has provided no evidence that Obama wiretapped him”. Aside from the fact that calling attention to such a possibility probably isn’t the best way to deflect attention from your campaign’s possible Russian Federation ties, the alleged wiretap also would have be extremely hard to set up.
Nunes also questioned the official explanation for why Flynn’s calls were recorded.
“Is it possible that President Obama knew about General Flynn?”
