Trump stumps for Rick Saccone in Pennsylvania
Waiting for the president was Rick Saccone (R), who is running against Conor Lamb (D) in Tuesday’s Congressional special election to represent Pennsylvania’s 13th district. Should Lamb win, it would be another indication of a hard road ahead for the GOP in this year’s midterms.
Trump mentioned Saccone a half-dozen times in a speech that lasted more than an hour, and brought the candidate onstage toward the end.
The National Republican Congressional Committee also launched a television ad hitting Lamb for striking a plea deal with a drug dealer when he was a US attorney.
“Our new slogan.is going to be”. “So I’m ready. I’m ready for tomorrow”.
Trump referred to Lamb as “Lamb the sham”.
Trump says if he runs again – which is “almost positive” – that he can’t use his “Make America Great Again” tag line.
“Our guys just can’t take winning for granted”, Trump Jr. said. We love you. Hey, didn’t we surprise them with women during the election?
Trump conceded Lamb might not back Pelosi but said most House Democrats will.
He then launched into a robotic imitation of someone being “presidential”.
“Do me a favor”.
If it wasn’t crystal clear already, President Donald Trump’s roaring rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday night underscored the fact that, more than a year into the job, Trump has no interest in leaving behind the vulgar insults or biting attacks on the free press that defined his 2016 Republican campaign.
“Not all of our friends on Wall Street love it, but we love it”, Trump said of the tariffs. “Steel is back. And aluminum is back”, he proclaimed. He touted his decision to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and boasted that it was something his predecessors couldn’t do. “But that’s OK”, he added, “because that’s what we do”. “It was great to see North Korea going and participating”.
Trump talked up the economy since his election. He held a campaign event at the hangar just days before Election Day in 2016, drawing a crowd of thousands.
Trump said the United States got the idea of capital punishment for drug dealers from Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Washington Post reports.
Trump made similar comments at a White House summit late last month, presenting the execution of drug traffickers as a means of stemming the opioid epidemic. “We’re gonna tax BMW”.
In remarks before Trump arrived, Saccone praised the GOP tax plan and the coal industry.
Trump talked about trade with Mexico and Canada and the ongoing NAFTA negotiations.
Even though Trump won the area by more than 20 percentage points two years, the Saccone-Lamb race is considered too close to call.
The president was scheduled to appear at the rally around 7 p.m.
“I’d love Oprah to win, I’d beat Oprah”.
He called NBC host Chuck Todd – who he’s nicknamed “sleepy eyes” – a “sleeping son of a bitch” and described Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters as a “very low IQ individual”.
Trump and the Republican Party have gone all-in to prevent an embarrassing defeat, one that would signal the potential for larger GOP losses in the November midterm elections. An upset would embolden them as they look to win in places where the party has lost ground in recent decades, and it would spook Republicans about their prospects in this tempestuous era of Trump.
