Trump Supports Completion of Dakota Access Pipeline
Protesters said the pipeline would cut through sacred ground at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.
In a report from Reuters, the Standing Rock protestors have been battling the elements just as much as they have been battling the authorities trying to drive them out of the area for construction of the DAPL pipeline.
Let us pray that the folks in Standing Rock and those who have joined them will find liberty and not death. We do not agree with the inhumane treatment by the militarized police.
The veterans are part of a group called Veterans Stand for Standing Rock.
The protests began because the pipeline is set to run beneath the Standing Rock Sioux reservation in North Dakota.
Although there are global laws to protect indigenous people from such action, they are not enforced in situations like Standing Rock, he said. The employee, who declined to give a name, said protesters had been in buying supplies all day.
The advocacy group Amnesty International, which has dispatched a delegation of human rights observers to the protest site, sent a letter earlier this week to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, requesting that the Department of Justice investigate the “policing of the Dakota Access Pipeline demonstrators”. Just last week, video was released of Morton County police officers firing water cannons on a below-freezing night at protesters, as well as using rubber bullets.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday said he supports the completion of the pipeline.
Trump’s federal disclosure forms show he owned a small amount of stock in Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners, the pipeline builder, and at least $100,000 in Phillips 66, which owns one-quarter of the pipeline.
“They provide an incredible amount of warmth, especially when you have a portable wood stove inside”, said the 24-year-old Grassrope, who was one of the first to reside at the camp in late summer.
“The VSSR decision to involve themselves with this unlawful activity is unnecessary, disgraceful and not reflective of the veteran community”, North Dakota Vets Coordinating Council member Russ Stabler said.
The North Dakota National Guard is prepared to help with any emergencies, said Jeff Zent, spokesman for Gov. Jack Dalrymple.
That’s not stopping more people from joining the protest, including military veterans from around the country.
The concert at 7 p.m. will also feature local bands the Lucky 5, Easy Ridin’ Papas and Oxbow Road, Carlson’s statement said.
State officials never contemplated forcibly removing protesters, and Dalrymple said his evacuation order stemmed mainly from concerns about dangerously cold conditions as the temperature in Cannon Ball is expected to fall to 4 degrees Fahrenheit (-16 Celsius) next week.
