Trump tells Congress Syria attack ordered to protect USA interest
If the White House pivots and frames any US action in Syria as about the conflict at large, there’s a greater chance that Trump’s actions will be seen as combating revisionist goals.
It comes after the United Kingdom backed USA airstrikes on a Syrian airbase where a horrifying chemical attack was allegedly launched. Surely, speaking about whether the USA has started practically correcting its stance is early. “And we believe that the first priority is the defeat of ISIS”, Tillerson said in a clip made public on the eve of the Sunday talkshow’s air time.
“The U.S. has a mission in the region of defeating ISIS, stabilizing Iraq and stabilizing the refugee population”.
“I think the Russians were caught off guard (by the U.S. strikes)”, Hertling said. And then we’ve got to go and make sure that we actually see a leader that will protect his people. Spokesman Sean Spicer said the missile attack sent a clear message to Assad, but he avoided explicitly calling for the Syrian to leave office.
A day before, defending the USA strikes on a Syrian air base suspected of using chemical weapons, Haley warned the Assad regime of more strikes if it did not stop using chemical weapons against innocent civilians. But he suggested that Trump was seeking a global political response for regime change from US allies as well as Russian Federation, which he said needed to reevaluate its support of Syria.
“What happened this week was really one of the president’s finest hours”, Haley told host Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union”. “And I think that’s something that was strong for the United States to do”. Further, as stated earlier, the Syrian conflict has multiple actors, including Islamic State, which the USA certainly wants to overthrow. “The world is waiting for Russian Federation to reconsider its misplaced alliance with Bashar Assad”.
On the question of whether or not President Trump’s military action against Syria was an “empty gesture” or a “publicity stunt” we take no position, but we find nothing in Jim Acosta’s tweets to support these judgments.
“I think that’s dependent on the actors that are at play”.
Once the USA wades into a conflict it rarely succeeds in containing its ambitions – let alone those of its allies. The missile strikes of Friday were meant to send a message from the new occupant of the White House who will not tolerate misadventures like a murderous sarin nerve gas attack, which killed in their beds sleeping children too.
Tehran is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s main regional ally and has provided military and economic support for his fight against rebel groups and Islamic State militants.
After last Tuesday’s chemical attack, President Donald Trump said his attitude toward Assad “has changed very much” and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson even said “steps are underway” to organize a coalition to remove him from power.
The government was “quick to blindly follow every order from the Trump White House”, he said. “The idea of the casualties came after”.
Trump’s decision to strike Syria won widespread praise from other nations. Despite intense global pressure, Assad has clung to power since a civil war broke out in his country six years ago, helped by financial and military support from both Russian Federation and Iran. The list, compiled from political science papers, isn’t comprehensive, but it provides a good blueprint: The more points an intervention hits, the more likely the president’s approval rating will increase.
“I don’t know what his thought process was in 2013”, she said.
In an interview to air Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation”, Tillerson said Russians were not targeted by the strikes.
