Trump Threatens Toyota With “Big Border Tax” If Plant Built In Mexico
A General Motors spokesperson confirmed to Fox News that the company imported 8,400 Cruze sedans previous year to supplement US production during the launch of the latest model, something it announced at the time, but insisted that it hasn’t brought any more in since the fall. Toyota said it has invested over $21.9 billion in its USA operations, including 10 manufacturing facilities, 1,500 dealerships and 136,000 employees. The U.S. might gain more jobs simply by negotiating agreements with other countries such as Mexico has. Mr Trump posted on Twitter.
Earlier this month, Trump criticised General Motors (GM) and Ford Motor for manufacturing their vehicles overseas and shipping them to the U.S. market.
The Republican businessman proposed a 35 percent import tariff on Mexican-made vehicles during his hard-fought campaign against Democrat Hillary Clinton.
While Ford CEO Mark Fields said it was market forces that led to the decision, he also said the move was “a vote of confidence for President-elect Trump and some of the policies he may be pursuing”. “Make in United States of America or pay big border tax!” So, in fact, GM makes the majority of its compact Cruzes at its Lordstown, Ohio plant. “You can look at the new investment that has gone into Mexico and while a huge portion is for the US, they are selling a lot elsewhere, too”. GM had, however, clarified that that the models produced in Mexico were destined to its global market.
GM has not disclosed how many Cruze Hatchbacks it expects to sell, though it confirmed Tuesday that it sold about 4,500 in the USA past year. In total, GM sold about 189,000 Cruzes in the U.S.in 2016.
The center is an independent, non-profit research organization that works with all the major automakers, “You couldn’t afford a vehicle that was 100% made in the United States”.
“So Ford is leaving”, Trump said during a nationally televised presidential debate in September.
At some point in the next week or so, it would be helpful if one of Trump’s advisors explained that the auto market in the U.S. consists of segments, and that carmakers here have traditionally struggled to make small cars as profitable as larger ones. Thousands of jobs leaving MI, leaving Ohio. The soon-to-be President had accused these companies of costing USA jobs. Nissan built its first Mexican plant fifty years ago and is now producing 800,000 cars there annually mostly the Versa and Sentra sedans.
The central bank did not reveal the amount of dollars it sold in its first such action since Republican Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election on November 8.
Ford, however, still plans to shift production of small cars to Mexico from Michigan, even as it uses $700m from the planned Mexico investment to expand its operations in Flat Rock, Michigan, and add 700 jobs.
“Instead of driving jobs and wealth away, AMERICA will become the world’s great magnet for INNOVATION & JOB CREATION”, wrote Trump. He has slammed United States automakers, including Ford which this week scrapped a planned $1.6 billion Mexico plant.
