Trump To Promise ‘Safety Will Be Restored’ As He Accepts GOP Nomination
Ted Cruz, told Business Insider.
Ted Cruz and Donald Trump’s tumultuous relationship came to a head on Wednesday evening, when the former presidential candidate refused to endorse his political rival at the RNC.
Ralph Winnie, an alternate delegate for the state of Hawaii, told Xinhua that Trump needs to get over 90 percent of the Republican vote.
But what was the event’s meaning?
After Cruz’s nonendorsement, “vote your conscience” edict had been issued, Scott Jenkins pronounced himself disappointed in Cruz, though he was far too polite to boo the way those unruly New Yorkers did.
But everyone in Kasich’s orbit agreed that Team Trump’s escalation of the feud this week would badly damage any chances of a detente – and could prove politically costly to the nominee.
He did all of that, and more.
Cruz said he delivered this speech out of “obligation”. There is a reason Shakespeare wrote about politics so much. “The convention crowd may have booed Cruz, but the Republicans at home that Trump is reaching out to were cheering, according to our data”.
Since then, “all the top political talent in the state has been called to the sidelines”, said one Republican close to Kasich.
Mr. Cruz appears to be explicitly crafting his strategy after that of President Reagan, who lost the nomination to Ford in 1976 but won it four years later. “Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it”.
The next presidential race is another country. Why should he stand with a presidential nominee he believes is a “pathological liar”?
“The rules are the rules, and we respected them”, said one delegate, Toni Anne Dashiell, who serves as a national committeewoman for Texas. Cruz isn’t playing chess. In response, they booed him as he left his stage. The Texas senator is not known for his ability to smoothly mesh with colleagues and work toward their version of party goals.
Even some of Cruz’s allies in the Freedom Caucus were dismayed by Cruz’s actions. So on Wednesday he defied and angered the Trump leadership in Cleveland. Speakers have included an African-American pastor and a Korean-American delegate who both praised Trump as a candidate who will foster equal opportunity for all Americans.
“I’m confident in the future, aspiring first ladies or potential first husbands will draw on the same kind of sentiments to advocate for their spouse”, he said. To them, the Cruz the nation saw on stage Wednesday night was the man of character and principle they had worked grueling hours for in Iowa all those months ago.
In his speech, Trump will also raise the specter of crime, saying gun violence is raging in many cities and that 180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records “are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens”.
And Cruz may have had simple revenge in mind. Bizarrely, Trump implied that Cruz’s father, a political refugee from Cuba, might have been involved in the plotting surrounding JFK’s assassination. The fact that the Trump campaign would offer a prime time spot to a former competitor without first exacting a promise to endorse is just one of many signs that the Trump campaign itself is not ready for prime time. Only Trump’s sudden appearance in his family’s box, dispensing smiles and waves, quieted the simmering crowd. GOP LEADERS REJECT TRUMP’S NATO COMMENTSSome leading Republicans are rejecting Donald Trump’s suggestion that if he becomes president, the US may revisit NATO’s longstanding policy of defending its allies against possible Russian aggression. If nothing else, the Cruz comments will test that.
Moreover, while Trump struggled to gain favor with evangelicals – an important Republican voting bloc – during the primaries, Pence will help solidify support among that group, he said. “Until now, he’s had to do it all by himself against all odds, but this week, with this united party, he’s got backup”.
