Trump To Republican Jewish Coalition: “You’re Not Going To Support Me Because”

WASHINGTON (RNS) Republican candidates tried to impress the audience by speaking of their commitment to Jewish values and Israel at the Republican Jewish Coalition forum on Thursday (Dec. 3), but some felt that Donald Trump crossed a line and trafficked in stereotypes. Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino mogul and GOP mega-donor, wasn’t in attendance on Thursday, but the influential Jewish Republican is deciding whether to use his considerable wealth to support Rubio or Cruz. “I don’t know if Israel has the commitment to make it”, he said.
He doubled down on those comments Thursday in an auditorium packed with Israel’s most loyal supporters.
The comment drew murmurs of disapproval.
Israel says the current violence is due to a Palestinian campaign of lies and incitement surrounding a sensitive Jerusalem holy site, which is revered by Muslims and Jews.
Trump shrugged off the criticism.
“I’m going to win”, Trump said.
The two candidates aren’t just duking it out for voters – they are also making a play to appeal to powerful donors, many of whom pay close attention to the RJC forum.
As soon as Trump started talking, social media exploded with accusations of stereotyping. Several candidates blasted him from the stage. “I don’t like to, as a deal-maker, give away a lot of cards”, he said. “It’s a struggle to safeguard the future of Israel”.
“We need a president who will stand unapologetically with the nation of Israel”, said Texas Sen.
“I’m leaving for Israel in a very short period of time”, he told the Jewish Republican Coalition in Washington DC during a campaign stop in which he sought to burnish his Jewish ties.
Shortly before the latest arrests, Nickolay Mladenov, the UN’s special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, had criticized Israel for what he described as the “slow progress” of the investigation. “Because so much death, so much turmoil, so much hatred, that would be to me a great achievement”.
The Palestinian newspaper Al-Hayat Al-Jadida on November 15 quoted Abbas saying, “We hope that the region will dispose of terror and terrorists, and that all the peoples of the world and all countries will work together to combat terror everywhere, because it has no religion, homeland or affiliation”.
“Is there anyone in this room who doesn’t negotiate deals?” he asked at another point, and then answered his own question.
