Trump To See Irma Damage, Recovery Firsthand In Florida
In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, the lack of air conditioning at a Florida skilled nursing facility (SNF) appears to have led to the death of eight residents, spurring action to ensure resident safety at other SNFs throughout the state.
Three residents were found dead and five more died in hospital.
The facility is not the only Florida nursing home that has been left without power by Irma.
An announcement from the nursing home, the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, affirmed that it had a “delayed power inability to the transformer which fueled the office’s aerating and cooling framework because of the tropical storm”.
Ten million people are still without power in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas after Hurricane Irma.
Hollywood Police Chief Tom Sanchez said investigators believe the deaths at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills were heat-related.
Memorial Healthcare Systems has established a hotline for families of the patients who were taken to its facilities for care. As of Wednesday, almost 60 percent of customers had electricity restored, according to Florida Power & Light.
The nursing home told the Broward County Emergency Operations Center that it had lost power, according to a statement by the center. The new rule would allow nursing homes to require that residents agree to arbitration in lieu of a dispute in court, a process that is argued to be more efficient, but also tends to be less favorable for the plaintiff and reward far less in compensation.
In recent years the facility has been cited twice for violations related to federal requirements about its backup power capabilities.
An emergency lawsuit has been filed by the family of one of eight people killed in a sweltering nursing home in Hollywood Hills following Hurricane Irma.
At least 100 people were evacuated from the facility and an adjacent hospital. “Then we go after the individual neighborhoods and look to ensure that we are getting those customers up”, said Gould. Earlier in his one-day visit to Florida, Trump also lauded state and federal officials for their preparation and response to the hurricane.
Fulfilling our commitment to patient care, we contacted Florida relief officials in advance of Hurricane Irma and offered to deliver hundreds of nurses and technicians at our own expense to be in Florida within 24 hours and prior to Irma’s arrival.
Police said they have opened a probe into possible criminal negligence.
Shortly after, first lady Melania Trump tweeted that she would accompany her husband to Florida on Thursday. Miami’s Mike Carvelli, whose mother is at the facility, said his brother was there earlier this week and found it “a little warm, but not uncomfortable” and there were portable air conditioning units in use.
“I wished I had just said you know i should just go and check on her, just make sure she’s okay but when you put something into professional people’s hands you think that everything’s gonna be okay”, said Eatherly’s friend Linda Horton.
