Trump to speak on immigration Tuesday in eastern N Carolina

On CNN yesterday, Tim Kaine showed up for an interview in which he made a decision to weigh in on the subject of sanctuary cities.

So what is a sanctuary city, and are sanctuary cities less safe because of how they treat undocumented immigrants?

Sanctuary cities – a controversial term that supporters don’t like – generally have policies or laws that limit how much local law enforcement and government agencies can work with federal authorities on immigration matters. “You know that there are places that refuse to cooperate with [Immigrant Customs Enforcement] and they have their assembly of different reasons for why they do it, but sanctuary cities are real”, he said.

More than 200 state and local jurisdictions have policies that call for not honoring ICE detention requests, the agency’s director, Sarah Saldana, told Congress past year.

Kaine didn’t address Cuomo’s question directly, instead saying that while he was governor of Virginia police chiefs opposed a plan to have their officers deputized as ICE officers, saying that doing so would make illegal immigrants afraid to report crimes. “From a law enforcement perspective, we want to build trust with that population, and our sanctuary city and other attendant laws have allowed us to do that”. Some states and counties have similar policies. And first-generation immigrants in general are less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans.

“He is the only candidate in this race who will stop illegal immigration, secure our border, end sanctuary cities, enforce our existing laws and stop American employers from hiring illegal workers”.
