Trump tries to freeze out Vermont hecklers: ‘Confiscate his coat!’
In the hour immediately before the rally, the Gannett-owned Free Press complained that “The Donald Trump campaign is refusing to admit anyone who isn’t a Trump supporter to his speech Thursday night in Burlington”.
“I’m taking care of my people, not people who don’t want to vote for me or are undecided”, he said. “OK, you can get them out”.
“Throw them out”, Trump shouts, before telling the crowd “Isn’t it exciting?” “I tell you one thing”. Sanders is now seeking the democratic nomination.
Those protesters met more demonstrators at the bottom of Church Street, eventually forming a crowd of almost 500 people. Haslam called on protesters to be peaceful in response.
And for those of you keeping score at home, as of the publishing of this article, the Trump rally has been interrupted by hecklers four times.
If anti-Trump demonstrations broke out attendees were asked to please do not touch or harm the protester, but to instead yell, Trump repeatedly until security arrived.
“The first night I had these characters…” “He wants to run against me. Well, maybe”, Trump joked.
But far more of Trump’s Thursday gun-control discussion was about the recent terror attacks in San Bernardino, California, and Paris.
Protester Suzi Wizowaty and others held candles in silent protest of the event. Theyre chopping off heads and she doesnt like my tone, Trump said. “It’s hard to make a silent statement in this”. The Hill reports that many Sanders supporters were urging people to buy up seats online – but, again, it won’t be too hard a venue to fill.
Trump worked the audience’s enthusiasm. “We’re going to build the wall”, Trump responded.
“Mexico!” the crowd replied enthusiastically.
The police department says “It is common for event planners to over-issue tickets to political rallies to compensate for efforts by a candidate’s detractors to reserve seats and then leave them empty” – something the Trump campaign was perhaps especially anxious about in the city that houses the campaign headquarters for Senator Bernie Sanders.
The Trump campaign gave away 20,000 tickets to the event, even though the Flynn Center has a seating capacity of 1,400, according to the Burlington Free Press. Thousands waited on line to see Trump.
Donald Trump speaks to a crowd in Biloxi, Mississippi. An avid supporter, McQueen said he is not looking at another candidate at this point, and said he likes how the billionaire businessman’s is unpredictable. “Don’t give him his coat!”
While Trump has said he disagrees with Obama’s move to expand background checks and increase mental health funding by executive action, he said Wednesday he believes that Obama “probably means well” and that Obama’s tears as he spoke about the victims of gun shootings earlier this week were “sincere”. “You can keep his coat”.
Police chose to allow the event to go forward because of a commitment to the First Amendment, the importance of allowing political speech and allowing people to participate in the democratic process, del Pozo said.
