Trump tries to mend GOP rift with endorsements of Ryan, McCain
GREEN BAY, Wisconsin/WASHINGTON Republican Donald Trump took steps to steer his White House campaign back into favour with his party establishment on Friday by endorsing U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan and two Republican senators seeking re-election, after expressing coolness towards them earlier this week.
Trump made the announcement during a campaign stop Friday in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
“He’s a good man and he’s a good guy”, Trump added, as he gave a thumbs up sign. “We may disagree on a couple of things, but mostly we agree”.
Trump earlier this week refused to endorse Ryan, telling the Washington Post he was “not quite there yet” – almost the same phrase Ryan had used about Trump before finally endorsing him.
Nehlen and Trump had somewhat courted each other and those who are supporting Nehlen, who is a bona fide crank, must feel some sense of betrayal by Trump’s endorsement of Ryan.
