In response to President Donald Trump’s tweet Wednesday saying Nordstrom has been unfair to his daughter, Nordstrom reiterated that its decision was based on performance.
Shares in Seattle-based Nordstrom traded around $42.70 before the tweet, then fell to $42.48 before ultimately closing up 4 percent.
His daughter Ivanka has seen her brand targeted by boycotts even though she has no formal role in the White House.
The Fox News host was addressing the controversy over Nordstrom’s announcement last week about its decision to pull Ivanka Trump’s line of clothing and accessories from its retail and online stores.
Press secretary Sean Spicer defended Trump’s attacks at his press briefing today.
This isn’t the first time the first daughter and her business interests have come up.
Less than a week after Nordstrom chose to drop Ivanka Trump’s eponymous line, Donald Trump slammed Nordstrom for its “unfair” behavior. “We made this decision based on performance”, Nordstrom said in a statement which said it had informed Ivanka Trump personally early last month.
In an attempt to mitigate ongoing – and increasing – criticism, Ivanka Trump announced in January she would step down from the executive role in her namesake fashion company after her father’s inauguration. “And the president has every right as a father to stand up to them”.
Nonetheless, the surge suggests that a Trump tweet doesn’t hold quite the same financial sway that it has in the past, and that investors are continuing business as usual despite the president’s opinions.
The chain also responded to a question on Twitter, confirming the comment from Ivanka’s rep about there still being items sold in store.
Wednesday morning, President Trump let Nordstrom have it via Twitter.
