Trump Wants to Tap Peter Thiel for Supreme Court
Donald Trump could make an historic nomination to the Supreme Court in Peter Thiel if he wins the presidency.
The Huffington Post ran a story on Thursday reporting that a source close to Thiel said that the businessman was telling friends that Trump was considering him for the vacancy on the court left by the death of Antonin Scalia earlier this year.
Never one to put the cart before the proverbial horse, Republican party nominee Donald Trump has reportedly already been floating Supreme Court seats. Though some conservative commentators have attacked her “creative pro-choice epistemology”, she spoke in favor of Justice Samuel Alito’s appointment to the Supreme Court in 2005.
Trump’s press secretary said there is “absolutely no truth” to rumors that Trump had offered Thiel a seat on the Supreme Court. Thiel spokesman said the billionaire “hasn’t had any conversations” about a nomination and “has no interest in the job”.
Thiel was not among the names mentioned by Trump.
Trump has previously released a list of 11 possible Supreme Court nominees.
The billionaire PayPal founder made headlines earlier this year after he revealed that he gave Hulk Hogan $10 million to fight Gawker because he considers the website to be a “bully” after they publicly outed him several years ago. If nominated and confirmed, he would be the first openly gay member of the Court.
Thiel, who considers himself a libertarian, once wrote that he “no longer [believes] that freedom and democracy are compatible”, arguing the “vast increase in welfare beenficiaries and the extension f the franchise to women … have rendered the notion of “capitals democracy” into an oxymoron”.
This summer at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Thiel told the crowd, “I am proud to be gay”. Thiel on the Supreme Court may be Trump’s worst idea, but it’s still a ideal marriage. Thiel wrote in his book, Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future, that he interviewed with both Scalia and Justice Anthony Kennedy, but did not get either position.
