Trump warns of costs for outsourcing jobs
Don Zeiring, the 62-year-old head of the plant’s United Steelworkers Union membership, said the change of heart at the nearby Carrier plant has some of his members wondering if Trump can save their jobs too.
“It makes sense for a president and his team to change a tax code, change the regulatory environment to help businesses”, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of the American Action Forum, a conservative Washington think tank, told CNN.
While the circumstances of the arrangement aren’t clear – there appears to have been some sort of state-level tax relief offered to the company – the implications are troubling to advocates of free trade and laissez-faire capitalism. The Trump Foundation, which as a registered nonprofit group can not make political donations, paid the IRS a $2,500 penalty. “This was … a promise that he was going to make us and I believed in it”.
A deal was struck and the company was able to save more than 700 jobs that were expected to leave for Mexico.
While hundreds of Carrier employees are celebrating the news that their jobs are staying in IN, not everyone in the company’s employment was spared. The company could lose billions of dollars if the Trump administration took a hostile position towards it. But what does that really mean?
From the scant details about the actual deal between Trump and Carrier, it’s clear the state of IN will be offering the company at least $7 million IN benefits.
But Carrier, a unit of United Technologies Corp., still plans to move 600 jobs from the plant to Mexico, the Wall Street Journal said. I am happy for them and their families, and I understand why they would feel grateful to Trump.
Some workers yelled: “Thank you Mr. Trump” and “Thanks Donald” as he greeted them. “Somehow it is not presidential for the president of the United States to call up some guy at Carrier, and say, ‘This is the president of the United States.’ Who cares?” he told supporters.
Donald Trump returned to his campaign roots Thursday in his first major public appearance since Election Day, resembling the pugnacious, brawling campaigner more than the traditional president-to-be as he held court in front of thousands of adoring fans – and even announced a Cabinet pick from the stage.
November 25: United Steelworkers Local 1999 president Chuck Jones, who represents workers at the Indianapolis factory, says he isn’t optimistic of success in changing Carrier’s decision and that union leaders had last met with the company three months earlier.
“I want to let all the other companies now that we are going to do great things for business, there’s no reason for them to leave anymore”, Trump said from Carrier’s plant in Indianapolis.
United Technologies and other companies which outsource jobs “should not receive federal contracts or other forms of corporate welfare”, Sanders wrote. “There are so many jobs to fill”.
“Your taxes are going to be at the very very low end and your unnecessary regulations will be gone”, Trump said.
It’s also being presented as an early victory for Trump, who is magnanimously saving American jobs before even being sworn in.
President-elect Donald Trump delivered a campaign-style speech at what was billed as the first stop in a thank-you tour in Cincinnati, Ohio, tonight, in which he pledged to unite America while at the same time recounting old grievances against the news media, and his political opponents.
Hammered out by United Technologies CEO Gregory Hayes, Trump and Vice President-elect and Indiana Governor Mike Pence, the deal lets the incoming administration claim an early victory before it takes office on January 20.
Trump also defended intervening in the company’s decision-making. At least 4,060 jobs are disappearing because employers are shifting work to Mexico or other countries, the filings showed.
