Trump welcomes Patriots – even without Brady – to the White House
Among those Patriots stars in attendance was Rob Gronkowski, who provided a light-hearted moment when he crashed press secretary Sean Spicer’s briefing.
He jokingly asked Spicer whether he needed any help, drawing laughs.
During the White House ceremony, Trump praised individual players and their overall performance at the Super Bowl, saying that “everybody played a role and everybody played as champions”.
The team’s White House visit caps a dramatic Super Bowl victory.
Just as a refresher, the Patriots’ Super Bowl win was the only game all season where Brady’s mom, Galynn, was able to attend.
Gronk’s babysitter is going to be looking for work after what happened Wednesday afternoon at the White House.
Trump has come under criticism from environmental activists who say his comments dismissing climate change as a “hoax” are misguided.
Trump has saluted Patriots owner Bob Kraft, a longtime friend, and says the longtime coach, Bill Belichick, has “built a culture dedicated to winning”. Neither were six current and former New England players who announced ahead of time they would forgo the proceedings ostensibly for political reasons: safety Devin McCourty, running back LeGarrette Blount, defensive end Chris Long, tight end Martellus Bennett, linebacker Dont’a Hightower and defensive tackle Alan Branch.
Brady is a personal friend of Trump’s, and the president often cited the quarterback while out on the campaign trail previous year. “Much better”, Trump said.
“I said, ‘Coach do you mind if I read the letter tonight to a stadium full of people in an important state.’ He said, ‘You know what I’d rather not have you do that”.
All things considered, the Patriots had a good crowd show up to Wednesday’s White House visit. Tom has previously called Trump a “good friend,” but was recently publicly scrutinized for showing support for the 70-year-old in the 2016 election. The champion quarterback decided not to attend the ceremony, citing family matters for his absence.
“I don’t feel welcome in that house”.
“That game will last forever”, he said. Thank you to the President for hosting this honorary celebration and for supporting our team for as long as I can remember.
He and Patriots owner Robert Kraft met with Trump in the Oval Office before the ceremony.
