Trump wins Michigan’s 16 electoral votes, state board says
Deadlines to petition for a recount in MI and Pennsylvania are later this week. In Wisconsin, a candidate who loses by more than 0.25% must pay for the cost of the recount, which could amount to as much as $1 million. He says tabulator machines are known to not count every vote and are vulnerable to hacking.
There is no evidence to support Trump’s claim that millions of undocumented immigrants skewed the popular vote for Clinton.
Dane County Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn has been assigned the case.
Stein posted a video on Facebook and a Google form that walks volunteers, step by step, through the recount petition process.
However, Wisconsin Elections Commission chair Mark Thomsen said Monday that he doesn’t like the suggestion that something was amiss with the system or with the way people did their jobs. “It just causes all our county clerks to go through the extra trouble of counting through all those ballots”. As of about noon today, the Board of Elections in Philadelphia was expecting to receive petitions to recount about 50 of the 1,686 voting divisions in Philadelphia.
The official said any funds left over would be disbursed according to Federal Elections Commission guidelines.
The recount could begin this Thursday.
One of the chief factors cited attorney Lawrence Otter’s petition include problems with the state’s electronic voting system that a computer scientist believes could make it vulnerable to hackers.
The vote differentials between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton in all three states were very thin. Any candidate has the right to challenge the results and request recounts.
And though dates for objections and hearings could push the start of any recount well into December, Thomas said election officials are planning to start a recount this Friday and work through the weekend, dealing with any objections as they come in.
Laurence Tribe, a Harvard constitutional law professor, said that although recounts are “entirely within the law”, Stein’s effort is probably aimed more at “trying to gain attention and establish herself as a national player”. That leaves it up to each of the state’s 72 counties whether to perform the recount by machine or by hand.
There has been no indication of widespread election tampering or voter fraud in those states or any others, and Trump aides struggled Monday to back up their boss’ claim.
Michigan’s Board of State Canvassers has officially confirmed what many have known for weeks: Donald Trump is the victor of MI and its 16 electoral votes.
On Sunday, Trump also alleged voter fraud in Virginia, New Hampshire and California, states which he lost to his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
Filing in Pennsylvania three days after she filed a similar request in Wisconsin, Stein’s campaign said she would file a similar request in MI by its deadline on Wednesday. Instead, he pointed to a 2014 Washington Post study arguing that non-citizens could sway the vote in that year’s elections (multiple other reports offered opposing results).
Michigan’s certification will do little to affect the overall state of the race. Stein estimates the Pennsylvania recount will cost $500,000.
