Trump wins Utah to extend GOP’s 5-decade winning streak
Not because Utah is normally a battleground state but because Evan McMullin made a decision to be a fly in the ointment.
Donald Trump’s brashness and antics created widespread backlash among Utah’s mostly Mormon electorate, leading pundits and pollsters to push the normally solid Republican state into the tossup category.
But McMullin reiterated his criticism of Trump as a divisive figure, and says he will continue to fight for better leadership. Enthusiasm for the Central Intelligence Agency field agent and Mormon missionary and his Jewish running mate, wife, mom and Republican operative Mindy Finn, is high, while Utah’s socially conservative and kind electorate fundamentally disapproves of both Trump and Clinton.
But the gaffe barely put a dent in Herbert’s veneer, as polls showed the governor leading the challenger by a margin of almost three-to-one.
LOS ANGELES, November 8, 2016-It’s exciting to watch spoilers and underdogs, and it looks like Evan McMullin has an outside chance of spoiling this bad 2016 election via the 12th Amendment that triggers if no candidate reaches the 270 electoral votes necessary to win today’s presidential election. While he’s performed poorly across the nation, his strong showing in Utah added intrigue to what ordinarily would have been an easy win for the GOP.
“I wouldn’t vote for Trump even if McMullin wasn’t running”.
They view him as a godsend they can vote for while remaining faithful to their “Judeo-Christian principles, like the sanctity of marriage, the sanctity of the life of the fetus”, Bybee said.
“My parents, my whole entire family is Trump supporters”. They stood by those numbers, but the cross tabs revealed a vastly older sample size.
For Jeremy Pope, a political science professor at Brigham Young University, the vote in Utah will come down to people casting their ballots for anyone but Trump. Earlier this year, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert’s campaign swag also included sheriff’s badges that read “fighting the feds”. Given the smattering of Never Trumpers and Never Clintons among the House members, if the House does hold the cards, it could see neither party candidate getting the nod. That poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points. “But I don’t think Mexico will pay for it”, he answered to laughter. Love, the former Saratoga Springs mayor, was elected in 2014 after defeating Democrat Doug Owens, a first-time candidate and son of a former congressman.
“Rude”, “unstable”, “arrogant”, “misogynist” – the staunchly Republican voters in the western state are not mincing their words when it comes to how they feel about Trump.
Republican Donald Ebmeyer of Murray, Utah says he voted for Hillary Clinton because he does not want Donald Trump to be president. Trump has also supported partial-birth abortion, and boasted he could “Grab [women] by the p*ssy” and do anything to them because he was famous and rich.
“Home” should never be a person in politics or a political party, but should be based on a person’s foundational ideals, McMullin said. If Clinton and Trump don’t appeal to you, don’t let their partisans stampede you into voting for the lesser of two evils. Utah allows for early voting. We have different ideas, we have different faiths and different backgrounds, and that’s why these timeless truths are so important, standing on principle, because we have to have liberty in a country where people are diverse.
His candidacy and rising popularity are likely to hurt Trump’s prospects in Utah where McMullin could capture the six electoral votes at stake.
With a trim build, blue eyes and a shaved head, McMullin has positioned himself as the white knight who can save America from “two highly corrupted, self-interested candidates not fit for office” – that is Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Trump.
